Forums - Sony - Sony now requires online check in for purchased PSN games

Anyone remember when PS4 destroyed Xbox with this is how you share games on PS4? Fun times. How long until this goes to physical copies. I deleted my entire wish list. More and more I am seeing why I am phasing into full retro.

This has existed since PS3. Most people never experienced it because they keep their consoles connected to electricity and internet (so even if CMOS battery went bust, you wouldn't notice it, probably only if a power outage ocurred)

The mistake is that they made it clearly visible where it wasn't before.

Sony has officially lost the plot. This was bound to happen with the changing landscape of the console industry. It just keeps getting worse. This might be the last console I ever buy.

I've heard some say this could be a bug. Hopefully that's the case as it's a shitty move if it's intentional.

To think the same company once did this:

There is no doubt Sony wanted to implement those policies Xbox publicly stated they were going to do but Sony was smart in seeing the backlash and seeing an opportunity. Now Sony is back to arrogant Sony. TBH when the gen started Sony allowed Godfall a single player game require online to play. Ubisoft freely does this now. Switch 2 is the last modern console I will ever own. Shit like this is why I no longer advocate against piracy. They treat honest people like criminals then fuck it, sail the high seas.

I'll wait for confirmation beyond customer support which has given mixed communication in the past.

The biggest benefit of digital to me is game sharing via setting my friends console as primary & vice versa. But this will make me consider investing in more physical purchases

This is completely unforgivable. I am done with purchases on PSN.
Would have been better off buying an Xbox instead.

... having a home console connect to PSN once every 30 days is a problem? Feels like all ps5 owners have internet.

My bigger issue with Sony is the lack of games, paying for online, etc.

How is it good for consumers?

It is also not just every 30 days. Once the CMOS battery dies, you will need to be connected to the server all the time in order to play your digital games.

While true, it's also about future proofing.

For example, let's say in many years time, certain games become unable to download for whatever reason (say copyright of a song used) and the game gets delisted but you have a digital copy on a PS4 which isn't connected and Sony stop doing these "checks", you could be denied the right to ever play that game that you paid for that you have installed on your machine.

This is why Stop Killing Games is much needed.
