You better hope they add crossplay to overwatch

I still don't know why Sony didn't allow it at first

This is mostly a response to this very undeserved backlash.

During the PS360 era you didn't have these Third Party devs or fans blackmailing Microsoft into Crossplay even tho it was the one Gen where the playing field was the most even. Multiplat games split was like 1.3:1 ratio instead of the 2+:1 ratio they are now. I feel like it simply comes down to Sony is a drastically smaller company so they were more easy to bully from their throne position. I don't know of any magical change in the development of these games which makes them more viable now with Crossplay than they were then. MS was on top and refused to come from their position.....until the tables turn and then everyone jumps on Sony's case and makes them look like the"Bad Guy" when really it was just the pre existing tradition.

The biggest question is how this will effect microtransaction royalties. Like who is getting that cut?

EDIT: Maybe Sony has worked out a specific deal with Epic. If the account began on PS4 then they permanently get tethered to microtransaction royalties even when purchased on another console. That would at least make this situation not a complete detriment to the Playstation Brand and not making Sony the one who has to lose by offering this.

MS just released a Fortnite bundle and touted the ability to play with other consoles. I wonder if MS and Nintendo are actually happy about this?

Nintendo never gave any statement to the crossplay affair at all, except that they advertised the games on their platform with the feature. I don't think they care if Sony is in it or not. MS used it to take shots at Sonys reputation. They lose an opportunity to do so.

The winners are the gamers on all platforms.

First Nintendo reveals the six month grace period for their online service, now Sony allows crossplay. We face a severe lack of reasons to complain, folks!

Six months? When was this revealed? I'm curious...

Apparently IGN asked and got an answer ... today. It's not six months but 180 days. Which is not exactly the same.

Corrected lol jk :P  Ya I know quite a few friends that are actually happy with this.  It doesn't really affect me but I'm glad Sony caved in as it seems that's what everybody wanted.

Aye, I don't really benefit from crossplay that much either, but gotta think about more than just considering myself with the overall picture. Now we just need square/microsoft to strike a deal for FFXIV to be on XB1, so we can have PS4/PC/XB1 crossplay like the xbox 360/ps2/pc days of FFXI

That'd be pretty great if FFXIV did come to XB1 and it seems Square also talked with Nintendo for this as well.

It'd be pretty sweet to play this on the Switch.

Difference is that last gen cross play felt like a nice pipe dream then everything change E3 2017 when it was reveal that Minecraft and Rocket League was getting cross play between Xbox and Switch. Then things only got worse when Fortnite AKA the biggest thing in gaming at the moment not only had crossplay between Switch and Xbox, but also Sony locking accounts on PS4 even if they made it on Switch or Xbox.

Also Microsoft did get flack for it last gen since it killed FFXIV chances of coming to the 360 and while I do love FFXIV, its far from Minecraft, Rocket League, and Fortnite in popularity.

The main thing that might get in the way of XIV getting ported now might be MS policy of having servers only for Xbox players be a requirement and the specs of the Switch. Then again who knows MS might change that policy and why FFXIV on PS3 was due to the system only having about 256MB ram while the Switch has 4GB of ram which is the minimum requirements for PC.  So while it chances have gotten higher on releasing for both systems, its still not completely on the table.
