Forums - Website Topics - This place is getting deserted, and we have to do something about it

I mean, yeah, it's a little late right now. Sure. But it's an undeniable thing that VGC has become decreasingly active in recent years, with a dearth of new members being one of the key reasons for it, and with each passing day it seems the place only grows more and more stale. The team (aka TalonMan) behind the website have been hard at work improving the experience of browsing here, with loads of new features and enhancements being made on a somewhat regular basis, but no matter what, it's not attracting new people or bringing back old users, and it doesn't seem to be making current users more active, either.

I think we can spend a long time theorizing just why this has happened, but honestly, at some point we're gonna have to figure it out if we wanna keep this community alive. I can only speak for myself when I say I love this place, but I know many share that sentiment and it's sad to see it fast becoming a mere shadow of its former self.

We need to fix it. How? Well, I don't know. Maybe you don't know, either. But, this is what this thread is for: discussing this subject, trying to come up with solutions, and hopefully start turning things for the better. You know, because multiple people thinking is more thinking than one person thinking. Or something.

Let's bring back the good days of VGC.

(All of that said, I am going to sleep now. Hopefully when I wake up tomorrow I'll read some interesting discussion on this subject, and if I don't, well, then I'll try again. Good night.)

To be fair, activity here is very dependant on the amount of news the gaming industry offers, and right now, everything is very still waiting for the next generation of consoles.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Come join The 2018 Obscure Game Monthly Review Thread.

I don't think that's quite right. The problem is you click on the most recent chart links it shows you 2018 still.

We don't have much to discuss (seriously) without the chartz.. here on VGChartz. It's like what's the point.

Not trying to flame here or anything but, we experienced this last time when they added the new regions and we went for almost a year or whatever without
the charts updating, a lot of long time users left and didn't come back.

There's a plethora of reasons why the site is getting stale and old but I would probably be banned for telling it like it is. I guess that's part of it though. This site is too heavy on the enforcing. I know if I was new and saw what you can and can't say on VGC I wouldn't wanna sign up either. I'd imagine a lot of current users feel the same way which explains the dip. Just my opinion of course.

this...too much banning for little things you said especially for new users. made a new account after lurking for years cause i got banned and not bother to make another account anymore cause of a very sensitive banning team...hey i might get banned again. then cycle will continue

What the site lacks, are news, and that's outside of their control.

With Microsoft not reporting sales numbers anymore, Sony not reporting Vita numbers, NPD going after all the leakers, Media Create stopping reporting numbers for free and the rise of digital sales making physical sales only lists pointless, there's just less and less sales news available to report on.

Things should get better when the next gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft are officially announced, but until then, there's just not too much that we can do...

I'm probably 95% less active than I was between March 2014 and June 2017.
The main reason being I just don't have the time for it anymore, which is likely what happens to most people.
I also don't see most of the people I used to when I come, so I agree, people are mostly stopping using it in general.
There is a good side of it as I don't see most of the toxic stuff was driving me away when I was still active, tho.

I believe next gen will bring more people, I was one of those, you too, we that can up from mid 2013 to mid 2014 probably ended here because of the increase of gaming news and excitement following the new generation, I also remember NX rumours and Switch release to be a very hot period here as well. So when we get nexg gen officially announced we will likely have a surge of new members here again.

About bringing back old members... well that's hard. The people I know why are not here or not that active anymore moved to other forums like VizionEk or Gematsu or whatever. Those people were driven away from VGC toxicity or problems, which has lessened a lot but it's hard to take away from people's perception.

I kinda like the place being less popular nowdays because it's easier to keep up with, having a small community is not bad.

We have numbers more often, a way better functioning site, and less toxicity (aside from politics).
If you really want a more active community try to push some conversations topics more often.
Not news topics, actual conversation topics.
For example, a game you really love (like Okami), make a thread about it, you'll find other people that love it interested in the topic.
A more popular game like Zelda or GoW would likely keep acticity way longer tho, and new games too.
I used to review old games I was playing for the first time here and loved it, it would bring small amounts of people and conversation but I always liked the kind of feedback it had, sharing games we like is always great.
New games are way better to get people here, if we start making threads about games we are currently playing more people will stop by.

I see an opportunity when Dreams release for a great thread for example, as it's a community creative tool.
Maybe Mario Maker 2 too, make threads to share levels and stuff.

So what I'm saying with all that stuff is that maybe we should try talking more about games we like here, that will get more people together.

I for one joined this site (after I discovered it because of 8th gen launch) to share my love for Disgaea on a thread about PS3 games.
That's why I stopped lurking and joined this site, to talk about games I like.

It is the circle of life,

Platforms come and go.

IRC ---> ICQ ---> FORUMS / MESSENGER ---> FORUMS / MYSPACE ---> SOCIAL MEDIA (FACEBOOK/TWITTER/ETC) / REDDIT

Social media has rewired brains to have shorter attention space. Most people just want all their info in one place Quickly scroll and be like yer cool whatever move on.

This place is pretty active compared to other forums who have died off..

Also when this place started we were all much younger and had more time. Now we all older. The younger gen don't care much for forums.

A lot of members have left, but I assume that there have always been members leaving. The difference now is that we aren't getting any new users.
