I still wonder why Crysis is considered such an unprecedented technical marvel

Maybe because it looks like a modern game more than 10 years after its release.

So did his predecessor Far Cry, but that one doesn't get praised

Almost finished my annual Tomb Raider II run (halfway through Ice Palace at the moment. No medipacks, all secrets of course). After that I think I'm going to dig into a bit of Mega Drive / Genesis action. I grew up with the SNES and I feel I've missed out on a lot. Anyone got any game recommendations? Maybe some hidden gems that don't get mentioned much? I'm familiar with:

- all Sonic, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Ecco games
- Landstalker
- Aladdin

Golden Axe games, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps, Micromachines 2, Mega Turrican, The Story of Thor, Light Crusader, Phantasy Star IV. Ristar and Alien Soldier look good but I haven't played them so I can't recommend them.

Nope, Far Cry doesn't look modern today, it was designed for CRT screens, it looks like a PS2 game on steroids (like most PC games of that era).

My Etsy store

My Ebay store

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

I said before already it doesn't look like much nowadays. Keep in mind there's almost 4 years in between both releases (February 2004 to November 2007). But calling it a PS2 game on steroids isn't giving it justice - unless you want to call all PS360 games like that, because for years they couldn't do any better than that game outside of bullshot trailers.

Also, Crysis doesn't look that much better these days. The textures are blurry, the models have very low poly counts (especially on foliage and enemy models), texture quality changes pops up all the time. It looks almost like an Indie game made on Unity now. Definitely not look modern anymore by any standards.

OK, so before I even get started on how I want the OP to look, I first need to know what you guys want this thread to cut-off at! So, I've picked a few time frames:
1. N64 and below
2. Original Xbox and below
3. Wii and below

This is mainly so I know whether or not 6th and 7th gen games should be part of the discussion here. I'll make it a poll too for this thread.

There was a playstation retro sale on the ps4 in the last few weeks here in the EU.... it included resident evil 4.... 5..... and 6 I actually cringed a bit when I seen it, but then I think that retro gaming is completely down to the individual user, some people think that gaming on a tradition gaming device is retro as it needs a TV to play, rather than just a phone screen (seriously, I've suffered this conversation.)

Me personally I always viewed retro gaming as before the turn to 3d, so anything prior to the PS1/N64 basically (3d at 10fps in star fox is still pretty retro) But I'm equally aware that you have people who use this forum who were not alive when the PS2 was the main console in peoples homes, it's terrifying, but that's how it is. Think retro is just down to the person though if you can justify your ideas that a certain game has a retro feel to it like Shovel Knight then it doesn't even come down to what generation those came from, because you won't find Shovel Knight on anything before the PS3/360 gen.

Naw

The stage geometry and textures, even at the highest setting do not come close to modern offerings in the same genre, the game has aged , would take some heavy nostalgia googles to maintain this game looks in the same leagues as something like Bioshock infinite from a few years ago or the likes of

Unless you mean those modern games... running on the base model X1/PS4 or the Switch, then maybe... but still stage geometry and lighting has advanced a long way in the last decade.

I've been thinking about picking up an old project of mine. The idea is to "modernize" a GBA SP, and by that I mean a custom shell, a larger battery, stereo speakers, and a Micro USB/USB C charging port instead of the old proprietary one. Maybe even a headphone jack.

The project fell through because the broken AGS-101 Gameboy I bought from eBay was lost during shipping (and my 45$ along with it ).

You never contacted eBay to ask for a refund?

Yeah, I can't REALLY argue that.  It began almost 20 years ago.  But I do have a hard time considering PS2 games as retro in my mind.  I'm just getting old, I guess.

I was just a teenager when it was 6th gen.

Still have fond memories of Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Smash Bros. Melee. ^^

Yeah, I was 19 or something when the PS2 came out.  I'd lived through the 8 and 16 bit eras, and to me, they're REALLY what I think of when I think of retro.  The switch to 3D kind of becomes the line I use, with some blurring.  And I understand that many people not much younger than me also grew up on the N64/PS1 era of gaming. For me, 6th gen is a bit of a stretch.  But then again, there was a definite shift in games from the 6th gen to the 7th gen, in terms of what types of games big publishers started focusing on, so I don't have a problem with it.  7th Gen, though.  No amount of convincing will make me think any part of that generation was retro.

Anyways, I personally don't think we need to worry about restricting ourselves in this thread. If someone wants to talk about 6th Gen games, I say let them. Maybe the discussion around why something should or shouldn't be considered retro will be fun anyways.  Nothing wrong with sparking more friendly discussion.

And what about indie games?  In my mind, Shovel Knight, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, and other similar games deserve to be in this thread as well. They're not ACTUALLY retro, but they're definitely channeling it.
