Forums - Sales Discussion - Comparison of sales of multiplat releases (PS4 vs. Xbox One vs. Switch)

Pretty pointless comparison considering how late most of these Switch ports were. Not to mention Vgchartz is unreliable to begin with. And of course, no digital sales.

Switch also has a much smaller userbase because it's still a young console while the Xbox One and PS4 have been on the market for much longer and have a larger userbase because of that.

Crash Bandicoot N'Sane Trilogy on Switch & Xbox One will be a great comparison. Or that new Monster Boy game.

Not all were late ports, like L.A. Noire, FIFA, AoT2 or Street Fighter. And yes, more releases head to head come later. For Crash VGC has no data yet.

The Wonder Boy remake (spiritual predecessor of Monster Boy) has sold more on Switch, but overall on both platforms only 50K (which is why it is missing in above list).

We can only work with the data we have, VGC-data of physical sales is the best comparable data we have. For everything else we have bits and pieces which are incomparable.

And as often, the userbase has only marginal effect on the sales, it also depends on the games in question. PS4 had after launch with small userbase for late ports like Tomb Raider or GTA great sales. You could also see, that Switch versions of games already outsell in half the cases theXB1 version, despite having only half the userbase. That all can only used partly as an excuse. And we can see, that for some genres even late ports do extraordinary on Switch. I pointed out BattleChasers earlier for instance. Others do badly despite being released at the same time, like FIFA. That is the really interesting stuff.

Excellently explained that it have much more to do with game genre and sure porting being quality enough. Time of release, userbase size and other factors affect but usually not that massively to change the marketshare in a significant way.

So sure a 60-40 split can be put due to those factors. but 80-20 could be smaller with all other factors being equal, but there would be a very major difference between platforms.

OK, new update. This contains a few weeks more of data and some new game releases. So I added a figrue about the new releases launch aligned (as for a late port the first weeks look especially bad compared to years of sales on another platform *cough* Minecraft *cough*).

That is some interesting stuff. So Crash is an IP connected to Playstation it seems, it sells extremely well there compared to the other platforms. Minecraft looks pretty well balanced between the three platforms comparing only the first two weeks. It's a late port for Switch, so in the overall view it looks extremely bad for Switch. Wolfenstein does similar to Doom, PS4 has about 2 and a half as much sales as XBox One, Switch looks considerably weak on that. Seems the shooter-userbase is more on PS4. This makes it more interesting, that Bethesda ports Doom Eternal over and considers Rage.

Lego does more or less similar on each platform, so do the indies (Shaq-Fu and Yonder). Also the japanese games - although missing the Xbox entirely - are pretty similar in sales between PS4 and Switch. This time PS4 and XBox One were also hit with a late port, but with these sales Konami probably isn't very happy. Switch dominates here totally, probably the user-base loves classic titles like Bomberman (or the PS4/Xbox userbase is too young to know the oldies).

The market-share graph is also updated. As a reminder, it shows how many titles have more than 10%/20%/30'% and so on market share on each platform.

It shows the PS4 as King of sales, followed by Switch and Xbox One being a lot closer to each other in sales.

And the new and updated overall view for games on all three platforms looks like this:

Your charts are great but do you happen to have a chart for games that released at the same time?

Some of the games were released at the same time, like FIFA 18, LEGO The Incredibles, Street Fighter or Just Dance 2018.

I know, i was just wondering if you had a chart with only games that released at the same time.

Would be interesting to see a comparison between games that launch together vs ones that were late ports.

It seems not very interesting, because after all it does only moderately matter if it is a late port. Obviously for something that sold with legs for years on the other platforms it takes time to catch up, but this is only Rayman Legends and Minecraft. All the other titles dropped with their sales after some time, so that it doesn't matter if the new platform gets to the same point.

Genre or concrete Software matters more. Among the ones that released at the same time for instance: FIFA does sell extraordinarily well on PS4, it takes a bigger market share than usual. This leaves much less for XB1 and Switch, which in turn look pretty bad. LEGO The Incredibles on the other hand is nearly the same on all platforms, the PS4 has not the usual edge with this title. Street Fighter does especially bad on XBox One. Just Dance does much better on Switch than other titles. These all released at the same time on each platform, but still the genre matters so much more.

Well, I went ahead and made such a graph anyways. This contains the titles I know launched at the same time, there may be others.

As you can see, the results vary wildly, but in the same areas the overall graph varies. So it seems late port has not much impact, after the newcoming platform had some time to sell too. For Rayman Legends and Minecraft this time are years, but for the other titles some months should be enough.

Should have done this as a software to hardware ratio, also most of those games listed are for lifetime, with some games being released far earlier on some systems fudging the result

very few games listed are time synced, or are not run long enough to compare legs, and if so are mostly ones that weren't released at the same time giving some advantage to systems with earlier release dates

A lot to negate from those petty graphics, but statistics have always been like that, quite selective out of context

Wow, you put a look of work into this! I'm sure someone else had already mentioned this by now, but I'd be interested in seeing a comparison taking install base of hardware into consideration, as the Switch is newer and shouldn't be expected to sell the same software as it will when it catches up to the other two.
