Traditionally console manufactures have sold hardware at a loss, for consumers its great because we get more bang for our buck.

I'm not sure why consumers are perceiving this as a bad thing now.

Traditionally, we don't have mid-gen upgrades because console manufactures want to make money on their hardware by now.

Bad comparison, I think the mid gen upgrade is Sony and MS trying to stimulate console sales while pushing new tech. X1 and PS4 came just on the beginning of 4K and that's becoming a focus in media.

I think there is a motivation to broaden interest in 8th gen consoles, the upgrade does that.

I don't have a god box. Scorpio really is appealing to me. If they price it competitively and offer a solid trade in for my S model then I would jump in without hesitation. Plus they offer things that I can't get with the Pro like mods and W10 marketplace. The biggest draw for me on PC were mods. If I can get that on a Xbox then I don't see the reason to make a big PC.

Bad interpretation. Console makers want to make money off of their consoles by now. Just is.

MS could take a small loss on hardware I think. It's not a big deal in the long term, even $20/unit loss can get you a processor that's a definite notch better.

I think the original Xbox lost something like $125.00 a unit when it came out so if they wanted to, they could easily make it a monster console and crush everyone else. They have the pocket depth to do it and have shown they aren't afraid.

Oh, I believe OG Xbox lost more than that per console sold. I mean it probably lost a few billion and only sold like 24 million. Which is probably why MS no longer gets their hardware from Intel or Nvidia.

I see articles saying the 360 lost about $125 per console sold and it was still very profitable.

You're making it black and white.

Losing money per console sold (lets say $10 or even $100) is reasonable when you consider the money made back on software, subscriptions, and accessories over years. Those kind of losses can be recovered. However, losing hundreds of dollars per console sold (like OG Xbox and PS3) is a risk they will not take anymore.

Scorpio at best is likely going to deliver 4K/30 fps with mid-high graphics. Its not going to be a cutting edge device, especially a year from now. The X1 is going to have what avid PC gamers consider mid range power.

Well, if people think it will cost 500$ and actually releases for 499$, it's technically true what they're saying.

Dreamcast was great hardware wise playing Soul Calibur on it in 1999 was miles beyond anything else on the market.

Besides MS' model is different anyway, they can release a new hardware model every 3 years, I think that will be the norm for them now. Sony will not be given a hardware advantage again, so launching in 2017 is good, if PS5 is 2019, then MS can move on a better system in 2020. It's a good cycle for MS.

Dreamcast didn't have that going for it.

Literally everything you mentioned about MS's business model is speculative.

And Dreamcast was thoroughly destroyed in specs less than 18-months after its release. Regardless of your nostalgia for SoulCal, waiting a year to adopt similar technologies to the PS2 would have given it a fighting chance.

Interestingly, the same will most likely happen to the Scorpio, as ~18 months later we'll at least have the announcement of the PS5.

@ OP

Definitely deflection.  Which is actually understandable this early out.  Still, I expect the Scorpio to be priced at $499, with the talk of the Scorpio being a premium product with a premium price and when they said the GPU alone cost as much as the PS3 at launch.  I still think the last part is BS, especially if it turns out the Scorpio is using an overclocked RX480, but it just screams "get ready for a more expensive console."  At best, I think we can expect a $449 price.  Of course, Sony will probably drop the Pro to $349, which will be the same $100 advantage the OG PS4 had at launch.

Plot twist: They're gonna make the price $900 and include 2 1070's and a godlike setup with 2 elite controllers bundled

That is just a thing, that every store make, for consumers to think that they purchased something  100US$ cheaper.

I don't think 399 is out of the question for Scorpio. 499 will be the max I think though.
