I feel like Sony fans are really concerned about a $399 Scorpio. It seems like a necessary move for MS. X1 S should be $250 by then.

Are they, really?
Pro will be one year old and probably cheaper than it is now. The lead PS4 family will have over the X1 family, by the time the scorpio releases, will be too big for the scorpio to mend, if it does any mending.
I wouldn't read into this. If Scorpio is gonna be $6/500 this would be his response. If Scorpio is gonna be $400 this would be his response.

In no way did I read that as a hint of the Scorpio being cheaper than we think.

$449 sounds about right. Even at $50 more expensive, it will provide a better value, a better 4K console and UHD player the other alternative lacks.
They don't have to sell lower than that because the main consumer is that one dumping money on a 4K HDR TV and they'll want the best option for it that can also playback UHD Bluray media.

Hasn't MS flatout said they want people to get their games whether on PC or Xbox? The Scorpio simply may not be for you as someone already in the MS ecosystem.
If their strategy was simply as many Xbox as possible, then their games would stay on Xbox. However, PC and Xbox combined is a wider audience than Xbox could ever reach alone. But to reach the most PC gamers they will have to support Steam as well (which could still require Windows 10).
