Bad comparison, I think the mid gen upgrade is Sony and MS trying to stimulate console sales while pushing new tech. X1 and PS4 came just on the beginning of 4K and that's becoming a focus in media.

I think there is a motivation to broaden interest in 8th gen consoles.

Bad interpretation. Console makers want to make money off of their consoles by now. Just is.
