This thing only works with N64 cartridges, plays like a N64, but has a small difference. You don't need to buy a separate display to play it and it has its own energy supply so you can play it everywhere without a external energy font

Wouldn't that be just a very impractical and flawed handheld?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Yes it is but I think the real question should be if all them are part of a single console wars or in other word, if home console compete directly with handheld console?IMO no. I dont think vita and wii u arent selling well due to ps4 and 3ds selling well. They would have failed regardless. One version succeding, doesnt necesarily translate in the other failing and viceversa.

And yet these get compared all the time, which if we are talking sales of consoles there really is no reason why we can't include all of them.

'Console' is just a broad term that can be divided into more specific terms like 'Home Console' & 'Handheld console'.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console This is the most accurate usage of the word.

However, in popular usage 'home console' is shortened to 'console' and 'handheld console' is shortened to 'handheld'.

Claiming they are the same thing is like claiming a wall clock and a wristwatch are the same because they both tell the time, and that a train and a car are the same thing because theyre both uses for travel and both have wheels.

Nobody claims they are the same. The simple truth is console is the umbrella term, like vehicles is an umbrella term for boats, planes and cars. There are just more broad categories (and that is gaming console) and more specific categories.

Just because we compare them doesnt mean we should included them as one, I mean, we like to make any sort of comparison of any kind of things even if it doesnt make sense just for the sake of arguing.  They are similar but the failing of one category doesnt automatically mean the success of the other and viceversa because one category provide a convinience that the others lack.  They can both co exist if things are done right.

Handhelds are consoles, but they're a very specific type of consoles. Home consoles are consoles, but they're a very specific type of consoles. Usually people associate the word 'consoles' with home consoles, which is probably the biggest reason why people are arguing about it. The cure would be to use more precise language. And some people don't think handhelds are consoles at all.
