And for bolded, why is it either or? Why you can't have a semblance of story to go alongside the gameplay. Lack of story is a product of low budgets and laziness, nothing to do with being a purist.

I don't disagree, but experience has shown that the EO team can't really do expansive stories, or great characters. Oddly, this seems to hold true for most great dungeon crawlers. See: Wizardry, Dungeon Seige, Eye of the Beholder, etc.

For what it's worth I think EO is serviceable at both - contrary to popular belief the series has always usually had plenty of both - but they're best served by taking the minimalist approach. Milenium Girl's Story mode shows that they're not great when it comes to expanding on those: the product was wholly unimpressive, even if the base mechanics were still largely enjoyable (but a step back from III and IV).

Hardly a contender, but I game I look forward to nonetheless.

Just hope they don't over Persona my Etrian Odyssey!

You're right. Don't want to breath too much life in this stale genre.

You heard me.

Even the remakes tried to make EO less EO =P

Remakes? Is there more than one? The remake of the first game included a classic mode, I'm fully OK with that.

Mega Atlus fans probably. Kind of like how Hyrule Warriors sold half a million copies by targeting Warriors and Zelda fans, this game will get Persona and Etrian Odyssey fans. It'll be lucky to get half a million though, even on a userbase approaching 50 million.

Except it only really targeted Zelda fans. Theirs like roughly 50k Musou fans tops on WiiU. Musou fans are all on PS consoles.

Except that's what they said about Monster Hunter, and it stopped nothing. There aren't all that many Musou fans to begin with, though, so really any Musou game that includes another IP is really mostly targeting the IP, not Musou.

Yep no of course, comparing MonHun changing consoles and its fans following to Musou fans buying a WiiU and Hyrule Warriors because they love the Musou series makes perfect fucking sense.

And to say their isnt many Musou fans is fucking laughable, if their wasnt Musou fans they wouldnt still be making the series main games in Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and Warriors Orochi which by the way are the higher selling games then the IP stickered versions.

Did you realize that the list you provided only show PS2-games in the top and the first game from a later era is actually a pirates musou?

Catherine sold more than any Persona ever though, why cant we have a sequal.

Well, not really. But it pumped out such healthy numbers... wish Atlus give us moar :(

The universe in Catherine is very interesting too. There's a lot of potential in it.

Catherine

1 Catherine PS3 2011 Adventure Deep Silver 0.26 0.12 0.20 0.06 0.64
2 Catherine X360 2011 Adventure Deep Silver 0.17 0.05 0.03 0.02 0.27
Total 0.43 0.17 0.23 0.08 0.91

Woah! It's probably a million already if we count digital sales of both ps3 and 360! (Hopefully...)

Aside from One Piece =P Because One Piece is a cheating bastard which has popularity well beyond what it deserves.

Seriously you could sell anything if you slapped a OP sticker on it in Japan.

Eh, I get that you're joking, but not really. They just slapped a story mode on the games to draw in folks who care more about characters and plot than dungeon crawling and battle mechanics. Fortunately, they still leave the Classic Mode alone, so folks can have their cake and eat it too.

Alright, serious answer over, I now respond by pointing out that the world is made of noobs and failures, and that an Atlus working for financially strapped parent companies has had to do tricks on the corner at another's behest. It's like Taxi Driver, but without the Oscars.

That's just not true. To keep it to the example of EO:Millenium Girl - it just starts with the fact that the story mode has pregenerated characters, as the story needs fixed persons, in difference to the normal EO-way, there you can freely create and change your party. So no, making a more sophisticated story has impact on gameplay, and yes I like my classical party generation and I actually like the guilds of EO.

So labeled Musous sell worse, except for One Piece, that doesn't count. Hmm, after the holidays it might be possible you have to add Hyrule Warriors also to the list of exceptions.

I'm glad you like it, but I do not. Looking at its competition, I don't see why they can't find some happy medium between the two.

Meh, better we have oldschool hardcore RPGs like EO for oldies like me AND storydriven RPGs - also for me.

But make something half-assed to try to please everyone is a sure recipe to desaster.

Eh, it's not like the two are mutually exclusive. Just have party members who can be any class. Final Fantasy III did it way back when, and I doubt it's the first. Fire Emblem Awakening did pretty much the same. It's doable.

Admittedly though, good game mechanics grab me more than a story, so I don't really care much. Again, don't over Persona my Etrian Odyssey!
