The X1 doesn't need a cable input because they are making deals with cable company to have their Apps.  The reason these same Apps are not on the Sony consoles is because Sony is in competition with the cable companies.  Today the 360 has Time Warner, Xfinity, Comcast, Version.  For people who use those services, they can cut the cable box completely.

Annnnd the entire point of having the hdmi passthrough becomes moot, why daisy chain all your hardware through the console when you can simply run them as apps?.

might have something to do with people not wanting to have to subscribe to a service to access a service theyre already subscribed to, just an idea.

Because only the big cable companies have such apps.  At this point in time its a fix for the other cable and satalite providers.  As more of those companies develop their own app then then the X1 will easily host those apps as well.

it's still meandering away from the overall point that people with existing cable packages and hardware, are more likely touse a games console as an actual console.
Also doesnt detract from the fact that the xbox one is a shitty middle ground as it stands, as you yourself have pointed out, there are apps and functionality already available on the much cheaper, and bigger-game-libraries xbox 360 anyway.

if anything the prevelance of apps to replace the cable box has a bigger impact on the usage of tablets and mobile than it does on the xbox one.

And what exactly is keeping the PS4 from having those Apps? Since the HDMI pass through thing isn't working out?

Newsflash, the 360 and PS3 have literally tons of media apps. They aren't that difficult to have on PS4 as well.

The X1's Media advantages are in hardware and os design but the problem is that it was designed to attract a market that doesn't really exist.

As you said many gamers expect their consoles to have media features, so why would they search for those features in the gaming machine they are buying?

Its simply power for price. PS4 wins that hands down, hence the sales. The longer they(MS) chase the Wii, the more disillusioned they(MS) will become.

They want to control the living room. If a husband wants to buy something to play games on and his wife wants something to watch TV and movies through Xbox is a decent option I suppose

Thats the thing. The PS4 and other devices has the Netflix so that defeats the purpose of the X1.

And Netflix is free on PS4, unlike on Xbox One.

I agree, & I'm glad that Microsoft's plan of taking over the living room is failing hard.

People nowadays view TV shows, movies, etc. through streaming nowadays on such devices like Smart TV's, Smartphones, Apple TV's, Roku's, Tablets, & many more. Live TV is 1990's - Early 2000's shit.

It's only a matter of time before people start streaming sports as well. Like Method114 & Muffin31190 said, Cable TV is on it's way out.

But the X1 does streaming as well.  Actually it does live TV, Streaming on Demand with a few cable companies and apps for the other content including their own.  If anything, you have more options going with the X1 then with any current device.

Even if they have streaming, PS4 has those things, too. And they're free to use, unlike with Xbox One.

I bet that even Microsoft themselves are going, "Damn it. We should've done what Sony did with the PS4, & made Xbox One as a gaming console first in mind with better specs while having media apps on the side."

I agree that no one will purchase the X1 to replace their cable but if you have the X1, there would be no need to keep your cable box if it support the app.  Shitty would be a very strong word as I would just say incomplete.  I highly doubt that by this time next year that will be the case.  Either way, MS has positioned the console so that it can be that be that central device that does the thing a console want without having to use multiple different devices.  Also if the rumors are true, the X1 will integrate with multiple devices, connecting them all together for a seemless experience.

Anyway, this is still young to see their total plan but things should be interesting in the next few years.

No one does, only people defending it don;t see the big picture. No one who is not into gaming is going to but an x1 for 500 bucks, just to watch their existing cable through the x1? LOL what a dumb idea. it offers nothing for the average joe

Streaming is the future and ps4 will do that as well.

The notion of a game console owning the living room is an outdated 1980's CEO view, mobile, straming is the future, not cable integration.

People see xbox as a gaming brand, thats what it will live and die off of, ms messed up bad.

How long do you expect XOne and PS4 TO LAST?

Don't forget - those NETBOOK cores and middle-class GPU are on par with a 400 bucks PC NOW.

In TWO years a 200 bucks SetTop-Box will be as fast as them or even be faster (thanks to NVidia Pascal).

So to speak THE OS IS THE NEXT CONSOLE. The specific hardware doesn't matter anymore. Its the AppStore that matters. And Microsoft has an OS to sell or give away for free: Windows Games.

Microsoft won't do nothing when Android, Steam or even cable comanies own OS are eating Microsofts lunch. Not way. Not after decades of investments...

Nintendo will survive as always: making unique hardware which enables unique software.

Sony is the big looser here. They "only" have the PS4...

But Microsofts strategy is perfect: a single OS and AppStore for ALL devices - mobiles, tablets, settop-boxes, consoles, PCs .

Will be interesting to see how Apple will play catchup.
