The X1 doesn't need a cable input because they are making deals with cable company to have their Apps. The reason these same Apps are not on the Sony consoles is because Sony is in competition with the cable companies. Today the 360 has Time Warner, Xfinity, Comcast, Version. For people who use those services, they can cut the cable box completely.

Annnnd the entire point of having the hdmi passthrough becomes moot, why daisy chain all your hardware through the console when you can simply run them as apps?.

Because only the big cable companies have such apps. At this point in time its a fix for the other cable and satalite providers. As more of those companies develop their own app then then the X1 will easily host those apps as well.

it's still meandering away from the overall point that people with existing cable packages and hardware, are more likely touse a games console as an actual console.
Also doesnt detract from the fact that the xbox one is a shitty middle ground as it stands, as you yourself have pointed out, there are apps and functionality already available on the much cheaper, and bigger-game-libraries xbox 360 anyway.
if anything the prevelance of apps to replace the cable box has a bigger impact on the usage of tablets and mobile than it does on the xbox one.

I agree that no one will purchase the X1 to replace their cable but if you have the X1, there would be no need to keep your cable box if it support the app. Shitty would be a very strong word as I would just say incomplete. I highly doubt that by this time next year that will be the case. Either way, MS has positioned the console so that it can be that be that central device that does the thing a console want without having to use multiple different devices. Also if the rumors are true, the X1 will integrate with multiple devices, connecting them all together for a seemless experience.
Anyway, this is still young to see their total plan but things should be interesting in the next few years.
