Wii U's success or failure (or the success or failure of its competitors) will have nothing to do with multimedia functions. Really, Nintendo was foolish for spending any time or money on the functionality that's already there in the Wii U (except TVii, which helps make the console more accessible for playtime). It's 100% about boxed software.

This is my sentiment as well. I stand by the comments I made in the other superchunk thread on this subject.

Didn't read everything, but as far as I understand, you are saying 3DS and Wii U will be replaced sonner than DS and Wii were.

I agree. Actual consoles are more like "evolutions" or the "next version". I see the 3DS been replaced in 2015-2016 and Wii U in 2016, 2017 at the latest.

For the U I'm starting to believe it will have a GC life.

"The console is a box people buy to get to Mario"

- Hiroshi Yamauchi

It's as true then as it is now.

However, that group of people is dwindling. The market has changed. People want more for their hundreds of dollars.

This is more evident with Sony who arguably does not have a Mario or Pokemon to rely on.

The market is dwindling because of many macro economic factors (And the Wii U controller is no Wii remote). I don't think multimedia functionality is what is going to get a console to sell in these conditions. Whatever innovation that is going to bring growth, will be in the games IMO.

I LOVE ICELAND!

First you say that why anyone would buy the nextbox and... then you say expect it to succeed? Well I guess that makes sense.

I would like to amend my prior post and say that Miiverse was also a good idea, use-of-resources-wise

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Literally everyone has some sort of device that does multimedia features better than consoles would do in foreseeable future. I don't get this obsession with wanting 10 devices that you can use for Netflix, Facebook and Twitter.

It's nice to have some of those features but people buy the consoles for games.

Way too early. When the WiiU is 6 years old than we can call it a failure.

CORRECTION! I never said WiiU or 3DS would be failures. Just shorter than expected lives. They will still be highly profitable for Nitnendo and provide quality gaming experiences.

Then could you clarify what you meant by "Nintendo is failing" in the title?

That says "nintendo" as in the company as a whole, not just their individual products. THey'll still be profitable, just in a diminishing manner.

But does that necessarily mean it's failing though? Does a company have to outdo itself with each new iteration of a product? If that's the case, Ninteno was failing from 1990-2006.

The 3DS is being supported like the PS2. And is doing way more better then the PS2 ever did in both Console & Software markets.

How long did the PS2 sell well for?

I could say the PS2 was a fail by what everyone else is saying.

And the Wii U already has full Western 3rd Party support with Razors Edge & Bayonetta 2 & Lego City Undercover & ZombiU & Wonderful 101 & so fort in its first several months.

The PS3 took 6 months to sell 1.2 million and 360 sold 1.4 million in its first 6 months.

SO please explain your nonsense about the 3DS & Wii U.

I just want to compare facts & history.

3DS is not being supported like the PS2. 3DS in only its 2nd year has a YOY decline during part of the year and especially the holidays according to VGChartz.
http://www.vgchartz.com/tools/hw_yoy.php?reg=Global&start_year=2010&end_year=2013&console=3DS

That is not a "ps2-like" experience in any fashion. That is a device that is showing problems even though its been massively discounted with solid holiday purchase options and some great games in its library.

For a better look at PS360 launches.... just see my other thread: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=151051

In their first six months they both sold well over the numbers you're providing. Granted, WiiU will beat that, but not by much if you continue the trend that is becoming more apparent. Nintendo will reduce their estimate of 5.5m shipped by the end of March. I'm guessing they'll knock it down by at least 1m.

Again, not sure where you're getting your numbers from or what they are cherrypicked down to. US only? NA only? idk, but certainly not WW.

EDIT: More info.... 3DS only had a 6% total yearly increase YOY in this its 2nd year. With the price reduction, games, and heavy price bundles/sales this holiday, it should've destroyed its launch year. But it didn't and it even sold less in Nov/Dec (as well as other months) between 2011 and 2012.

i wanna re-read this again in the future...

Yes. If they continue to reduce in market and sales, they eventually go away. Nintendo was not failing from 1990-2006 as their handheld business continued to grow. Now all of their platforms are in a diminishing market of strictly dedicated gaming.
