Forums - Sales Discussion - Quality =/= sales

I don't know what you're trying to prove apart from just stating the obvious. Or is there some hidden sarcasm I didn't catch?

You'd think that I'd be flattered that you copied my thread, but I'm not. Your copying is annoying as fuck. STOP SAYING LULZ. STOP SAYING INDUBITABLY. STOP COPYING MY THREADS.

mainstream appeal = sales

WTF? It's like a new thread like this pops up every day!

The thing is, a game that was a 95% two years ago may just be an 85% today. Standards change. If Super Mario Bros. 1 released today, it wouldn't be considered one of the greatest games of all time. Killzone was a 91% back when. Halo is an 87%, now. If we could go back in time and release Halo 4 back in 2009 (or whatever), it would dominate. Nothing is immune to time.

This thread isn't a Halo vs Killzone thread, this was just as an example. It's acceptable to talk about these games in context of the original question ("does quality = sales?") but if it turns into a Halo vs Killzone flamewar then it will be locked, and suitable moderator action will be taken against those responsible.

I've just discovered something shocking while browsing through the vgchartz database...quality does not equal sales, and I have definitive proof. Halo 4 and Killzone 2 are the best examples I can use to illustrate this phenomenon because they're both their respective consoles flagship exclusive FPS franchise.

Anyway, lets look at quality first. Here are the metascores of the games:

Killzone 2: 91

Halo 4: 87

Given that Killzone 2 is objectively better than Halo 4, any rational person would assume that Killzone 2 has sold more than Halo 4 ever will... But that will certainly not be the case. Here are the sales:

Killzone 2: 2.87m

Halo 4 (estimated LT sales based on a secret formula): 10.9m

That's right folks, despite Killzone 2 being of a higher quality, it has still sold less than Halo 4. Halo 4 will even outsell Killzone 2 FW only. What the hell?! Startling, to say the least. Can anyone explain this phenomenon?

Nice original thread OP but i expect MS fan to retaliate with their own thread, comparing forza to metal gear solid or even gt5

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

No, this is not right.

Only you could come up with a thread like this.

Too many people think like you do.

But I see what this is about.

Any minute now, everyone else will too.

I could use an analogy about movies, just to insult Transformers, but I won't. The audience decides which qualities they want to embrace. It could be fun factor, graphics, community, or what have you. With movies, it could be an actor, plot, plot twist, premise, or whatever. The people decide if they want to be blown away by dumb fun or if they want thought provoking content.

And I agree. Quality=/= sales.

I admit I giggled behind my sleeve.

Still, being serious, quality and sales are obviously two different things and the idea that one will equal the other simply doesn't follow. We have a plethora of examples that prove that there are many more factors involved in sales than pure quality of product.

Nice work, man-bear-pezus.

It all boils down to this: Quality =/= metascore

Quality is subjective, after all.

Logic used in the OP = invalidated

Did someone actually use Killzone 2 to take a shot at Halo 4?  Isn't bringing up Killzone 2 in a conversation to take a shot at Halo so, oh, what's the word?  "Last decade"?

Gee, I hope this is not true.  I am looking to sell the world's worst boardgame to raise money for charity.  I hope lack of quality = sales actually,
