Forums - Gaming Discussion - Your top 5 games of all time and why?

1. Fallout 3

Awesome gameplay, I love the post-apocalyptic environment, I love the unique enemies, unique dialogues, fun perk system, fun weapons, etc. Only drawbacks are long loading times and occasional single player lag.

Best moments are: If you're evil then nuking megaton, or if you're good then it's when you get Fawkes as a follower and he annihilates everything that moves.

2. Call of Duty 4

Revolutionized online multiplayer on consoles, with it's create-a-class system of perks, attachments, etc. The maps were amazing, the controls were great, the game ran super smooth. It had annoyances, but nothing near as annoying as the problems in the newer CoD games like MW2, Black Ops and MW3.

Best part for me was glitching in the online multiplayer. I don't mean like those asshole hackers who can see and shoot through walls and stuff, I just mean using jumps to get on top of buildings that other people don't know about. My friends and I were great at doing this. Backlot was the best map.

3. Pokemon Red

Pretty self explanatory why this game is great. It was just massive amounts of fun, and still is. I still pull out the gameboy once in a while and go at it. A couple things I would change though are less Zubats in caves, let us re-battle random trainers after each time beating the elite four, and don't make us watch the whole credit thing each time you beat the elite four.

Best part is probably when you get your first real strong pokemon and just run train on people. Like if you catch a magikarp, then when he finally becomes Gyarados you feel unbeatable having Gyarados.

4. Crash Bandicoot 2

Crash Bandicoot was great, but Crash 2 was a big improvment. Way too much fun, and I don't care what the Nintendo fanboys say, Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 were as good as any Mario game there has ever been. If Sony had kept the series going with Naughty Dog into the PS2 era it could have easily been as good as a seller as Gran Turismo (10+ million copies)

Been too long since I've played it, can't think of a best moment. I like the levels where the camera reverses and you're running towards the screen with something chasing you. It makes it tough not seeing what's ahead of you.

5. Grand Theft Auto IV

My parents didn't let me play GTA3, Vice or San Andreas, was too young when they came out. So GTAIV was my first GTA game since GTA2 on the PS1. It's just a well put together game with tons of fun stuff to do. The only things I hate are no flying planes, no tanks and no ridiculous weapons (miniguns, flamethrowers, etc.). But the online is great with lots of fun modes. People love to hate on it because it got perfect 10's and at first I agreed with some of the hate thinking it maybe deserved something in the 8's or at most the low 9's...but after having now played it a ton and it still being a game I play 4 years after it came out, I can safely say it deserves 10's.

I never beat the single player, so I can't say a favourite moment. I like picking up a hooker and then taking her off a jump in my car, and I bail out in mid-air and let her crash to her death in my car!

2. Killzone 2: The more FPS games come out, the more I realize why this game is so great. Best $60 I ever spent on anything. 105 days played lol. Even when I'm currently bored with nothing else on the radar, it always gets me engaged. Server customizability is the big key that sets KZ2 apart from the competition yet sadly, the devs didn't work with what they had for the sequel.

Holy smokes, that's impressive! I thought my 30-35 days on Call of Duty 4 was a lot!

Growing up in the NES era to now, having a top 5 is hard, but

1. Marvel vs capcom 2
2. mega man x 4
3. xenogears
4. Super mario world 2: Yoshis Island
5. Smash Bros (n64, melee and brawl)

Other than number 1, this list would have probably been different had I seen this thread just a few hours later, but currently this is how I feel.

1. Warcraft 3

Near perfect rts combined with the best mod support ever in a game. The dota mod created a genre which is quickly becoming the most popular on the internet. League of legends has over 15mil active users. Dota 1 averages well over 100k concurent users on garena. Dota 2 is in closed beta and yet is one of the most popular games on steam and heroes of newerth's peak concurent users is higher than any game on steam currently, and thats just the big players. RTS and MOBA games happen to be my 2 favorite genres so warcraft 3 is my favorite game by a very very big margin.

2. Halo 3

Thousands of matches played, ridiculously detailed stat tracking, enjoyable coop campaign, and forge mode giving unlimited replayability and insanely creative maps mean this shooter is about as good as it gets in terms of a competitive console fps. Since I didn't start playing PC fps games till recently, I actually prefer playing  fps games with a controller than a keyboard and mouse which is why I rate halo 3 higher than any pc fps.  Gotta have that vibration...

3. Pokemon Blue

Though I think pokemon is a very stagnated series that has had no noteworthy improvements since gold/silver, I still remember the original very foundly. Not only was it the first video game I ever owned, but it was simply incredibley fun and addicting. Infact it was the most fun I ever had with a handheld game.

4. Metroid Prime

The very first fps I've ever played and boy was it incredible. From the epic boss fights, to the briliant puzzles, this game had it all. And scanning, for some reason I was very addicted to scanning...

5. The World Ends With You

I am not a very big jrpg fan but I really enjoyed this game. The pin collecting had a very "gotta catch em all" feel. The combat was incredibly engaging and took advantage of the DS's unique controls. The story was entertaining, and the bosses were fun and challanging. Though to be honest this game probably wouldn't have made my top 5 list if hadn't first played it only a few years ago.

1.) Final Fantasy VIII

Reason: This was the game that got me addicted to the Final Fantasy series. It had done so many things right that clicked with my preferences. Amazing characters, story, battle system (maybe not the Draw system, which was unique but also monotonous), GFs, music, graphics, card game, and the list can go on. It was just fun on many different levels.

2.) Final Fantasy X

Reason: Possibly one of the most emotional story rides a person can enjoy. The power that Sin held over Spira was gripping, and held me captured until the bitter end. The characters were great ( especially Yuna). At the time the voice acting/graphics was unbelievable. This game has my all time favorite battle system.

3.) Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

Reason: Honestly 2.) and 3.) here in my books could be tied. Star Ocean: Till the End of Time has one of the most amazing plot twists i've ever seen. While I understand that some people may not like it. I found it to be downright insanely awesome. It was something I never seen coming. Also add in the great characters, ost, and crazy game length. This game definitely was a fun ride.

4.) Xenosaga III

Reason: All of the Xeno games are quite good, but Xenosaga III is the one that put it over the top for me. The difficulty of the game combined with the massive rebound off of the semi-awful Xenosaga II battle system was nice. The storyline for the entire series is very complicated, so you really need to be paying attention or else you will be confused to no end. Namco......Why oh WHY did you give this damn studio to Nintendo. WHY!?!?!?!?!?

5.) Demon's Souls/Dark Soul's

Reason: If you are a person who really enjoys video games, and a challenge that isn't this seventh gen stale mind numbness, then you HAVE to play these games. They aren't games that are based around Uncharted production values, an amazing storyline, or even great voice acting but they do one thing right and they do it damn good. The gameplay in the Soul's games is sheer entertainment whether i've just beaten a boss for the first time after 30 tries or even found a new damn weapon. This is a series I would like to see stick around for a very long time, and please From Software, do not sell out and give in to easier difficulties to appease a "new audience."

This is some some seriously difficult shit! Not only do you have to pick just five games, but also somehow put them in order! (Captain Obvious approves)

Anyway, let's give it a try:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

Excellent story and gameplay. Lots of exploring and actually not very linear at some points (The three first adult temples could be done in any order, and once you've got them down you could choose between the last two as well). Several side-quests and memorable characters.

Favorite part: Versus Ganondorf and Ganon. Probably also my most favorite events in gaming overall.

2. Halo: CE (Xbox)

Another game with a great story, but its gameplay is what truly defines its awesomeness. If you somehow get tired of the campaign (which you can't) there's always system link that extends its replay value enormously.

Favorite part: The snow level. A tank + Warthog jeep + foot soldiers against several alien blockades = epic battles.

3. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)

The funniest gaming experience known to man! Combining platforming, horror (well, to some extend...), racing and shooting elements, this game features what might be the most varied gameplay ever! And the multiplayer even features massive warfare!

The protagonist? A FUCKING SQUIRREL!

Favorite part: The Dracula level. Never before have I laughed so much at a game, ever!

4. F-Zero GX (GC)

The greatest racer of all time in my opinion. With 30 vehicles per race at over 1000 km/h on lethal racetracks, it's hard to compete against this action-packed pile of awesomeness.

Favorite part: Probably all multiplayer gameplay. There's nothing more satisfying than blowing up one of your human opponents during races!

5. Super Mario 64 (N64)

This classic revolutionary 3D platformer remains my favorite to this day. All kinds of crazy levels and elements prevents you from getting tired of this game!

Favorite part: The credits. Not because the game is over at that point, but because it brings out so many memories =)

Reminiscent of Smeag's ultra-fun top 50 thread. Well, here goes nothin'

Top to bottom:
1) Super Smash Brothers (n64, Melee and Brawl): This series is how you make a fighting game with charm. All my favorite mascots with an addictive 4-player local battle mode. Easy to enjoy, fun to master. Great music, humorous items, great combo and death system. Cliff strategy is also very interesting, projectiles, multiple forms of the same attack. The game is constantly full of surprises and special uses of attacks. Great great hit.

2) Warcraft III: There is not a game in this world that attracted me and captivated me as much as Warcraft III. From the days of the beta, I was in love with the new races, and so impressed by what the community was able to pull off so early on in the competitive arena of the game. The story was intricately weaved, the music godly. This is an A+++++ game in my book.

3) The legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (runners up: OoT, MM). The legend of Zelda is a series that will never cease to attract me. Even in its most surprising form (toon shading), the music, the worlds, the humor, the epicness without needing to be too dark or serious. This is an incredible piece of art.

4) Super Metroid. This game is an ultimate classic. The atmosphere, the art, the music. The secrets, the extra-terrestrial mystery. All so amazing. I miss the times.

5) Final Fantasy VIII (runner up: Final Fantasy IV). First, the visuals. Incredible architectures, an interesting setting (students?), a mysterious intro. Second, music. From the bells of balamb garden to the zings and zangs of ethar city's silence and motion, there is no better final fantasy epic than final fantasy VIII.

And then, the happy runner-ups: Megaman NES/SNES, Castlevania NES, Punch-Out!!, Street Fighter II/III/IV, Ninja Gaiden NES/xbox, Soul Calibur DC, Sonic Adventure, Super Mario Galaxy, and many more.

Well this is a difficult one to answer, but I'll give it a try.

1: Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)

  • Reason: The start of my favorite franchise, and certainly a technical masterpiece back when it released.
  • Favorite moment: Racing the Warthog on the last level.

2: Legend of Zelda: Ocerina of Time (N64)

  • Reason: Countless hours of fun, and to this day a masterpiece
  • Favorite moment: Winning Epona!

3: Knight of the Old Republic (Xbox)

  • Reason: Masterpiece of an RPG, healthy story, interesting characters and cool locations
  • Favorite moment: Can't decide, the entire game was epic...

4: Gears of War (X360)

  • Reason: A graphical masterpiece in 2006, and a extremely fun multiplayer mode which I've spent 100's of hours on.
  • Favorite moment: Escaping the Kryll in the Junker

5: GRID (X360)

  • Reason: Offered me 100's of hours of driving fun online!
  • Defeating my high school buddy on Le Sarthe every single time.

1) Civilization IV
Culmination of the series evolution since the first one in 1990s, it's everything a strategy and history buff wants, a possibility to remake past and guide his nation towards a glorious future. Having endless possibilities was on of it's strenghts, making almost impossible to define what Civ IV was all about. If you doubt me, go to civfanatics forums and read about hundreds of threads complaining about CivV and trying to describe what made Civ IV so unique. It's really dificult do find the same definitions.
2) Simcity 4
It seems that four it's the magic number (while V it's the nightmare of gamers), but simcity4 it's also an almagam of ideas that worked, making possible to be the mayor, or mayor, of a huge metropolis, with a range of possibilities. Easy to play, but with the right and needed dose of complexity, it made you really feel like the boss of a thriving city.
3) Donkey Kong Country
One of the few game a I completed when I was a child it's one of the best plataform games ever. Balanced, addictive, and really fun. There's no describing getting a rhinno and running over evreything in front of me. It was amazing.

4) GTA: Vice city

The GTA I have played the most, it's for me the  most envolving from all of them. I really felt in the part of Tony, making the game last as much as I could, buying places and completing the side missions until, saddly, the game ended.

My favourite moment was when I ran with chainsaw after some guy during of the missions. Awesome moment.

5) Battlefield 1942

Best Multiplayer I've played. huge maps, vehicles and no BS of hiding until your life refilled. It was brutal but rewarding and being on PC, not limited to the also BS of 8 people per team as some of it's consoles counterparts(I don't remember, but I reckon I playe with over 20 people on my side, in lan, of course). Mind you, this is in the begining of the 2000s, so it was a great feature for the time. It was also slower than CS, wich made it more strategical, since each round lasted for 5 to 15 minutes, requiring some patience while playing.
