Forums - Gaming Discussion - The 9th Annual Greatest Games Event - Discussion Thread

Well then it's over already. Loved reading all you guys's and girls's stories! Thanks for hosting mZuzek!

Updated my list in the Official Thread, so now it's time for some statistics. I see shadow1980 already posted his and others mentioned how many successful guesses were made, so here are mine as well. Because stats are fun!

Platform statistics:

Under here are some statistics like the amount of games from the main list by platform (counted by a game's original platform only) for each platform I own, winners in each category are bolded. These are to be added after the day of the #1 game, the final day.

Other statistics:

  • Newest Game: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (WiiU/Switch), 2017, #10
1990's and the fifth generation are still going strong. Including PC games from the era, the fifth gen consists of 18 titles in my list. Zelda wins once more as the series with the most entries. The 2010's have lost three games now over the course of the last few years. I left off Luigi's Mansion 2 this year, and Super Mario 3D Land as well since a couple of years ago and lastly Uncharted 3 wasn't featured which I have off and on but not this year either.
I haven't counted the guesses on my games, maybe I'll do that later this week.

I leave the forum for a few hours and this is what happens.  That will teach me to not live on here 24/7.

Based on S.Peelman's post, it also feels like he was checking my lists from previous years out, hm... so, how does it feel to lose to a filthy cheater?

He seems like a good guy to me.  I couldn't have lost to a nicer filthy cheater.

Anywho, here are some statistics for my list:

Breakdown of platforms
(if its on 2 platforms I give it 1/2 a point)

Atari 2600 - 1
NES - 5.5
Genesis - 3.5
SNES - 3.5
PS1 - 3.5
PS2 - 6
Wii - 1
PS3 - 5.5
Wii U - 2
PS4 - 0.5
GBA - 3
Switch - 2
Arcade - 5
Mobile - 1
PC - 7

So basically I have the most games under PC, but it has been around for decades so that is understandable.  After that I have PS2, NES, PS3, and Arcade, respectively.  The PS2 and NES were extremely dominant platforms, and the Arcade was actually the dominant platform for much of the 80's.  The surprise for me is the PS3.  I suppose I need to consider the PS3 an under rated system.  (And the PS4 is over rated.)  Also I have 3.5 for both SNES and Genesis, which is appropriate.  I have 7 games total for that generation which actually makes it my favorite generation for home consoles.  Although if you count handhelds, then PS2 + GBA would be on top with 9 total.

Overall, I think I have a good appreciation for all of the various gaming generations, and there doesn't seem to be an overabundance of games from one platform or time period.

#1 Heroes of Might and Magic III
guessed by The_Liquid_Laser
platform Windows
release year 1999
developer/publisher New World Computing/3DO
genre turn-based strategy

last year #1

As last year my TOP game is Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It just works so well. It has turn-based strategy and turn-based fights on a hex-grid. Outside battles you build your kingdom. It all works together just great.

The good thing about HOMM3 is, that after all these years, I can still pick it up and play it and have fun. It works just as well as on the first day. What do you want more from a timeless classic.

So, with that out of the way, I'm gonna get to work. In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if you guys kept this thread going a little longer - it always saddens me to see people leaving it so early every year... but then again, I can't really ask for people to discuss about something when I've nothing to propose. Oh well.

We could now that we finalized our own lists take a peek at the lists of others and make the new years resolution to choose a game and play it this year from a different list which we don't know yet. I wanted to play Neverwinter Nights already the last year, but didn't came around to it, so I should try this year. Also I always only play Heroes of Might and Magic 3, I should also try out other parts in the series, namely 2, which is high on Liquid_Lasers list.

I already played Katamari Damacy in December, which is a great game and qualifies for my next years list. One of the games that don't get old, like Okami.

Hopefully Dark Souls will at least reach the top 10 but it is very unlikely from what I have seen. :/

Speaking of statistics and stuff (by the way, that was some in-depth stuff there), I just want to express my disdain for all of you Super Mario Bros. 3 voters. Seriously, this has to be the most overrated game out there, ever. I'm never going to understand the love for it.

Haha, you really have it out for SMB3. I'm not sure if it would be in my personal Top 50, but I did play it a lot as a kid, and the controls are so tight. Sometimes I forget that it was an NES game. The single major flaw in my opinion was the inability to save your game. Mario games are short, yeah, but it would have been nice to save my progress now and again, especially given the strong cultural inclination to not leave consoles on back in the day. Nowadays, we leave our consoles on for extended periods of time, but in the 90s I can distinctly remember trying to hide the power indicator lights on my consoles so my mom didn't notice when I left it running.

I was around when it first came out. It was the first truly modern platformer. The game looked amazing even by NES standards. The level design still holds up well today. It kinda gets listed so high for the same reason OoT gets listed so high. It just did everything first, and holds up fairly well in the gameplay department. Both games have been outdone in recent years, but the fact that they did it first, and did it decades before other games on people's lists makes them rank highly.

BTW, I put my list in today. It is in the main thread where lists go.

The task of ranking my top 50 games was pretty tough. There were a lot of games I had to reflect upon as I have not played them in years, even games like Mass Effect 2, Super Mario World, and Sonic Adventure. It was an interesting exercise to say the least.

I guess it's also weird of me ranking games like NBA Street among the top 50 of my favorites of all-time. At one point in my life, basketball was pretty much my obsession. While I still love the game now, basketball was pretty much everywhere for me when I was younger. Playing the NBA Street series was some of the most fun I've had.

Finally got back home after 9 days away. I filled in the last five games on my list and thought I'd share some statistics from my list for anyone interested.

First, here are the games that fell out from the list this year:

  • Super Mario 64 (Currently #54)
  • Tales of Symphonia (Currently #53)
  • Mega Man 2 (Currently #52)
And here are the new games on my list:
  • Yakuza 0 (at #29)
  • Hollow Knight (at #28)
  • Horizon Zero Dawn (at #19)
Platform Breakdown (By number of games):
  • NES: 2 Games (Highest ranked game was Super Mario Bros. 3 at #24)
  • SNES: 4 Games (Final Fantasy VI at #17)
  • WiiU: 1 Game (Super Smash Bros. for WiiU at #33)
  • PS1: 5 Games (Final Fantasy IX at #1, The Legend of Dragoon at #2)
  • PS2: 9 Games (Shadow of the Colossus at #6)
  • PS3: 17 Games (Dark Souls at #4)
  • PS4: 5 Games (Dark Souls III at #8)
  • PC: 9 Games (Freespace 2 at #3)
Decade Breakdown (going by the games' EU release date):
  • 1990s: 11 Games
  • 2000s: 17 Games
  • 2010s: 24 Games
Most Represented Franchises:
  1. Final Fantasy: 5 Games
  2. The Legend of Heroes: 4 Games
  3. Dark Souls: 3 Games (4 if you count Bloodborne as part of the series)
  4. Command & Conquer: 2 Games
  5. Uncharted: 2 Games
Other Random Stats:
  • Biggest Winner: Bloodborne and Final Fantasy VIII (Up 2 Spots from last year)
  • Biggest Loser: Command & Conquer (Down 9 Spots)
  • My top 3 has remained the same since 2001
  • The oldest game in my top 50 is Super Mario Bros.3 (1991)
  • The newest game is Horizon Zero Dawn (2017)
And that's about all I can think of right now. Really enjoyed doing this once again, and I'm already looking forward to seeing how the top 50 changes over the next year. There's already one potential game that might make it in next year.

This is a good idea. I had already picked one a couple of weeks ago though when mZuzek and... I’m sorry I don’t remember.. was it you? Could have been you.. Anyway I’m finally going to play Okami this year, bought the Japanese retail Switch version. Got delivered to my neighbour for some reason, but that’s okay.
