I doubt mass effect will move much hardware, being a sequel to a plot heavy game snuffs out any chance. Id say MAG has an as good if not better chance of moving hardware.

Nope, Mass Effect 2 is like a million times more popular than MAG. Check the Amazon sales charts for example, or just any indicator of hype like forum threads.

PS3 barely beating 360 despite being 299 and the same price as 360 now. Never thought I'd see that day. Wouldn't be suirprised if 360 beats PS3 in NPD.

A couple things

1. Mass effect will sell more sortware than MAG, but people who want to play it already own an xbox - therefore little hardware increase

2. Xbox is still cheaper than ps3, and getting its ass kicked worldwide. Even a small loss in its home territory hurts.

Tie in America, maybe PS3 is selling 25%-33% better in Europe imo (maybe not), and Japan doesn't even count.

A small loss (tie) in it's home territory doesnt hurt at all given the current relative pricing (PS3 a massively better value). It more speaks to the fact Sony can never overtake 360 in America for sure now, no matter how much they cut the price.

Why doesn't Japan count?

Finally America is waking up to the power of PS3.

Because xbox is losing. Its like my new chart that only includes the week of Metal Gear solid 4, that clearly shows ps3 domination this gen

He isn't disputing that ME2 is more popular; he thinks it doesn't have a good chance of moving hardware because it's a sequel.

I dont see much logic at all there. Sequels move as much hardware as any (Halo 3, MGS4, Gears sequel nmber XXX a).

The raw popularity of the title has the effect.

I could just as easily say, as a generic shooternd new IP that people arent familiar with, MAG will move less hardware.

He's talking about sequels to already established franchises on the particular console.

MGS4 and Halo 3 were both the first iterations of those franchises on their respective consoles.

Sequels still do move hardware though, unless im mistaken Uncharted 2 actually gave the PS3 a small boost.

Ill try to explain. For starters halo 3 and MGS4 were the first of their series on a platform, in other words, people who wanted to play MGS4 went out and bought a ps3 on its release day so they could. They had no reason to buy one before hand, because there was no metal gear on the system. Its the same case for halo 3.

Now if you look at MGS2 and 3, 2 moved significant hardware, while 3 did not. The reason is because people who wanted to play metal gear already bought a ps2 for MGS2, so they didnt buy another ps2 when 3 came out. Thats what mass effect falls into, people who want to play it most likely already own an xbox.

Very, very good. Sales don't go down, yet. If things don't change, this year will be great, with good sales even during slow weeks.

What was the last x360 game to move serious hardware?

BTW: Thanks for editing my post, Norland. I didn't spot that error.

What was the last PS3 game to move serious hardware? MGS4 is the only one I can think of that did. I guess FF13 only in Japan (will have no effect elsewhere). But I kind of think the Slim had more effect on Ps3 sales in Japan than FF13. Just a hunch.

Games dont move that much hardware.

Somehow I can't help but think you thought that was a derogatory question towards x360.

May I assure you it was not.

It was a question I needed answered to actively take part  in the "ME2 moving x360 hardware" mini discussion.

I didn't ask about PS3 games moving PS3 hardware but thanks all the same.

BTW PS3 outsold x360 for the first time in ages when K2 launched. If that is not moving hardware then we must agree to disagree.

@CGI

So it was Gears2. Thanks for that.

Back @Javaupdate

I almost agree, VERY FEW games move hardware this far into a console's life.

good to see the PS3 gaining some ground on the 360, what interests me is will the PSP>360 WW this week?

time to play the waiting game

Low sales, is obvious that holidays has passed already
