Ok, for those that are complaining about Open Office's calc program -- what do you use it for? I make pretty damn complex sheets with a lot of nested conditional "if" statements and other fairly complex calculations and the program works like a champ. Clearly Microsoft's Excel is the more polished version and, well, it's commercial.

If you have something specific that Calc won't do or fails at, please tell me what it is as I'm curious...

I have never used Calc before so here are a few of my questions:

1. Can you create macros in the Calc spreadsheets? ( and I am not talking about putting "=..." in a cell. I mean creating actually functions) And if so what language does it use?

2. How well can it comunicate with a database? Are there functions to have the spreadsheet automaticly pull data from a database and update the information when the sheet is opened?

1. Yes, OOo Basic (similar in functionality to VBA)

Sub ParaCount
'
' Count number of paragraphs in a text document
'
Dim Doc As Object, Enum As Object, Count As Long
Doc = ThisComponent
' Is this a text document?
If Not Doc.SupportsService("com.sun.star.text.TextDocument") Then
MsgBox "This macro must be run from a text document", 64, "Error"
Exit Sub
End If
Count=0
' Examine each component - paragraph or table?
Enum=Doc.Text.CreateEnumeration
While Enum.HasMoreElements
TextEl=Enum.NextElement
' Is the component a paragraph?
If TextEl.SupportsService("com.sun.star.text.Paragraph") Then
Count=Count+1
End If
Wend
'Display result
MsgBox Count, 0, "Paragraph Count"
End Sub

2. Don't know, but macros are OO.o wide so scripting ought to be able to do that.

Around the Network

I really love Ubuntu but I noticed a few things. Iono for you but it seems to crash more to me. It makes my computer faster but for what? There's not much compatible... For a free OS, for people who just surf/read mails, it's great! But for people who want more... =/

It's a shame though because I like the layout, the speed of Ubuntu... It uses like, not much memory.

P.S. I'm not a computer whiz and I may be very wrong, but I thought about something about Sims (1 and 2). Linux is a Unix-like system and Apple is made on Unix... So why not try to make the Apple version of the Sims compatible with Linux insteed of Windows? Wouldn't the chances of sucess be higher?

Do you mean, why don't they make the Apple version of Sims compatible with Linux?  They could be thinking that they won't make any money on it....many companies shy away from developing for linux because it isn't owned by one bloated and powerful corporation like windows is - and the userbase is really small, percentage wise.  (You could get into the whole chicken and the egg thing with that argument though).

 -Are you getting any sort of messages when it crashes (or, do you have an ATI graphics card?)

I use linux for pretty much everything except playing games that don't work correctly in Wine.  There are a lot of programs available to do anything you want to, you just have to know what they are sometimes.

Still, if you have an ATI card though....ATI's linux support is (and hasn't been) very good - ATI drivers can cause  the X server (graphical interface) to crash - although they are supposedly working on improving them.

I downloaded Wubi, I let it install it then it restarts my computer.

I could choose between: Windows and Ubuntu.

I choose Ubuntu and I get this:

The screenshot shows you encoutered IO-Errors, that means the CD/DVD was non-readyble in some parts. Maybe you should try to burn it again (maybe teh errors where only on the one medium) or you choose another program to burn the DVD. Possibly even that will not work, possibly your CD-Drive is not recognized correctly by linux. In that case an alternative may be using linux on a USB-stick, if your BIOS supports booting from a stick: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/01/01/usb-knoppix-510 Hope some of it helps you. Good luck.

I use VLC, OpenOffice Writer(it works the way I want it to, not like Word...some problems with using Word format though), Firefox, GIMP, for simple spreadsheets I use Spread32.

And of course PHP, mySQL, Apache and Notepad++.

They don't make more money with the windows version than the Apple version... That's a lame excuse. Sorry but simple truth.

Yeah it's ATi unfortunatly... =/ I don't have money for another graphic card and anyways I don't see the use now that I don't play any games...

ATI has a brand new driver released just after your version of Ubuntu which has across the board double game performance, AIGLX support for desktop 3D effects and more stability all round.

Which R-series (R400, R500) of card is it? Older cards have open-source drivers that are much better for stability.

It's Radeon 9250, if I remember correctly.

shame konnichiwa, if you want my advice, the windows installers aren't great, and I'd go for a CD install every time. Although burning can be difficult, luckily for you, canonical will mail you CDs free of charge.

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

Just visit that site, give em your name and address, and they'll ship you as many ubuntu CDs as you want. It's a fantastic service, get 10 cds and give them out to your mates. You'll have to wait for delivery, but since you seem to be having a few issues with burning a CD, this might be the easiest option.
