ATI has a brand new driver released just after your version of Ubuntu which has across the board double game performance, AIGLX support for desktop 3D effects and more stability all round.
Which R-series (R400, R500) of card is it? Older cards have open-source drivers that are much better for stability.
Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.
