I believe that for Red Steel 2 or any core games to be successful they need to appeal to more than the core gamer. They need to really sell the social aspect of the game.

Let's see if it has advertising first. Also, imo, one shouldn't buy or not buy a game depending on whether it is advertised. Not advertising does not mean they don't believe in the game's quality, it just may mean they are stupid enough to believe what is being said by Wii detractors about Wii demographics and are afraid to lose even more money. Buy a game if it's good, not if the publisher is smart enough to advertise or stupid enough not to. |

but the question is... whose fault is it when a game isn't advertised? Most of the advertising for games are SPONSORED by the console company, Nintendo somehow seem to be above this role and leave game developers to dry. Again, whose fault is it? Is it the game companies' fault when the gamers don't know much about their games? Nintendo is fully aware of this, and is swimming in cash, is it really asking too much to put out an ad or two to some of the better-made games? |
what are you talking about. Of course it is the publisher's responsibility to advertise a game, that has nothing to do with Nintendo unless Nintendo is the publisher.
currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Nintendo sent employees from Retro to help these guys to implement good FPS controls, they allowed them to pack the game with M+, now you want them to pay for the advertising too? Nintendo is not the publisher in this situation, paying for advertising has nothing to do with them. I mean why don't we just get Nintendo to develop the game while we are at it.
Furthermore, it's not like we are talking about John and Jake's Indie development studio down near the 7/11, we are talking about Ubisoft, a huge company that actually employs as many people as Nintendo does itself. There is no way on earth they can't afford to give this game the advertising it deserves. The only people potentially hanging this game out to dry are Ubisoft.
it is doomed to fail because the publisher thinks it will fail.
If only they put serious effort into marketing this will NOT FAIL.
also does this mean that the quality of the game has suffered?
Unlike Madworld, Conduit, No More Heroes and most other core Wii games, this one offers the promise and excitement of actual sword fighting. And unlike the first red steel (which sold tons based on that promise) hands on time with the game shows that it actually works. This game is going to do a lot better than 500k because it just plain offers a new and exciting experience. It's in a bit of a class all by itself for third party wii games in this regard.
I think it'll still do a million.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!
Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.
Too bad, Ubisoft as a whole is making enough money that even if they start failing now, it would take years before they fully go down.
I imagine part of it is how they got burned on the TMNT fighter and Shaun White World Stage. I can't believe they put out an annual shaun white sequel. I couldn't have been the only person who figured it would bomb while the first one kept selling. And the turtles game... well....
But really, I expect this one to beat their expectations. Hey, theres some good news! A hardcore wii game that will beat expectations!
