Forums - Nintendo - nintendo really could give us a little bit more

now this is not going to be the thread you think it  is going to be.. n shit and stuff.

most of you are probably thinking that i am going to talk about more games, well im not, so suck a nut. what i am going to talk about is the content in the games that are already released. i feel like nintendo could have put a little bit more effort giving us more content in some of the games that got released this past year or two.. or three.. or seven... or eighty.

anywho, needlesstosay, i am a nintendo fanboy. its obvious from previous posts and shit (selling nintendo games new, hd games used. gotta love it.).

first i want to start out with Punch Out Wii!!!11 great game, love it, really happy that they threw old school nintendo fans a bone. but dont you guys feel like they could have given us a bit more? there was what, 10 fighters in the game? 1 new character? really nintendo? wtf? i would have been a much happier nintendo fanboy if they had included EVERY CHARACTER TO EVER APPEAR IN A PUNCHOUT GAME (along with more newcomers exclusive to the wii version). would it really be that hard to program? no. would it have cost a lot to put in 10 more characters? NO. i just dont understand why they didnt do it. the only characters from super punch out that are in punch out wii are aaron ryan and bear hugger WTF!?! what about dragon chan? mad clown? hoy quarlow? (but then again do i really want to fight that mother fucker again?).

anyway, my point is that i was kind of let down by the lack of content in the game. would it really be that hard to program a time trials mode? that would have been awesome. and it would be as easy as taking a fucking shit to program.

well, that turned out longer than expected, but i have to talk about nintendo's new release: NSMBWii. great game, love it, but have somewhat of the same problem. i think coin battle is cool. free for all seems kind of pointless, but it doesnt hurt to have that in the game, does it? no it doesnt. you know what else wouldnt hurt to have in the game? MARIO VS LUIGI. that was THE SHIT on NSMB DS. why not take that shit to the wii version? also, what about mini games? that was a nice little side thing to have in the ds version. why not have it in the wii version? that shit was so much fun to get drunk/stoned and play, it would be even better on my fucking cool awesome 1080p tv and shit.

anyways, those are some gripes i have had with nintendo lately. i love them, they are the best company in the world, but i feel like they are going to do this with future games.

you want to know what would be cool? a fucking kick ass mario vs luigi type thing in super mario galaxy 2. it would be the shit if nintendo would make some sort of original competetive multiplayer in mario galaxy 2, but are they going to do it? no theyre not. i dont know why but i know they wont. it fucking sucks. they did it for super mario bros. 3, why the fuck not for galaxy? i just dont get it.

maybe you guys could fill me in? and stuff n shit?

I agree and I disagree.

You know, resource management is a tricky thing.

I posted this in a NeoGAF thread and they just sort of laughed it out and didn't even consider, but maybe Nintendo needs to outsource more of their development in search of a greater output. Since they want to stay relatively small, they can increase their work force by hiring companies that will do some complementary work. Of course that will require investment, and we also know Nintendo is very careful about that because of their dividend policy with shareholders.

The way they're doing it now, considering third partis aren't willing to take risks without money hats, they have to increase their software output. They already outsource a lot, but bringing new companies to releave them of other technical burdens should be thought about in the future.

Of course they're already expanding, but it's gonna take a while for we to see the results. And if they really go HD, then you're really not gonna see it, since it will take a lot more man power to create individual games.

Azelover hit the nail on the head with his second sentence.

Every company has to look at their resources and optimise their output in a way that will get them the best results. If they add say online to NSMBWii or add a few more characters to Punch-Out!! they'd begin to see diminishing returns on their investments and it wouldn't be worth it.

Sure Nintendo could outsource more in the future however it's not getting them anywhere right now, especially in Japan where their biggest out sourced games include Sin and Punishment 2 and things like Captain Rainbow, both which are examples of games that sold or will will sell poorly in that market.

I think Nintendo need to make smart partnerships like they're doing with Team Ninja for their out sourcing efforts to work effectively but I'd much rather see more internal teams developed in the next 5 years. We've seen second parties already this generation on Project Sora and Monolith Soft (neither releasing anything/anything notable thus far) but I think Nintendo should push towards more EAD groups.

If Nintendo could create an EAD group in the GameCube days (EAD Tokyo, which incidentally has become perhaps their finest group) then I'm sure they have the resources now to expand their development might further.

wow, i never would have thought that there actually could have been... a good reason for this.

how would adding a few characters to punch out diminish their returns? i dont get it. it seems to me that it couldnt do anything but help. does it cost that much to program a character and add it to the roster?

Many companies release games with a lot of content: but one game a year, or every two years...

Look at Twilight Princess: 50 hours of gameplay...more would be... too much... and would need even more people, and even more time, and even more money... and how long did it already take, the way it was released? 4 years? 5 years?

Nintendo releases many games each year, for Wii, and for DS... you can't ask for more and more, more games, plus more content in each one of them, as they have a limited man power available...

Do we ask Pixar to release a new movie every month? They could "maybe" do it, but the quality would be the one of a saturday morning TV show, and not the excellence we're used to with all their past classics...

The only way Nintendo could do more is by hiring new employees, buying some new 2nd parties, or doin' deals and collaborations with 3rd parties... as each "good quality" game now takes at least one year to be made on DS and two years on Wii, they need to plan all this really early, so even if they move now, we will see the results... in two years, or next gen...

Let's hope they'll do it, but for the moment, with only 4000 employees, some of them in the commercial departments, and some of them workin' on the hardware side of things, miracles can't happen... and don't forget that the usual quality is still there anyway, in at least 5 to 10 games each year... not that bad, so let's be thankful for what we've got... :)

I agree with everything you said EXCEPT....I don't want more resources poured into EAD. What I want, are more resources poured into SPD, Retro Studios, and ESPECIALLY NST. I want underutilized development studios (particularly NST in this case) to be able to grow, develop, and expand outside of the EAD sphere of influence. EAD is an awesome and legendary group, but Nintendo's future is going to lie in them being able to have more software diversification via new IPs. I don't constantly want Mario games to be outsourced to these groups, I want them to be working on unique and new content....just like Nintendo was back in the early 90s (Mario Kart, Starfox, etc). As a second-party developer, Rare were making THE cutting edge shit for Nintendo back in the day. I want a non-EAD Nintendo studio to be that edgy side of Nintendo to help push things forward. Retro and NST have the potential if they're cultivated correctly.

Yes designing even one character takes time:

- General art design

- 3D model design

- Gameplay design

- Dialogue and voice acting

- Character theme and cut scenes specific to that character

- Q&A and quality testing of this specific character

Also adding more characters would mean that the difficulty curve would have to be altered for all the other characters as Punch-Out!! is already a pretty tough game and just adding harder and harder characters would mean the majority of players would never see the added characters anyway.

That unformatted post is too hard to read. But in relation to your thread topic name, I have to say:

All I want is Zelda something. Be it screens or a trailer. Anything.

Here's Zelda something:

it releases soon too ^^

This is why I think doing 2D/retro gaming as well as their Wii franchise games, is the way for Nintendo to go, a 2D game probably requires a smaller budget and team than a 3D game, and probably will still sell as well or even better than the 3D version would, this way Nintendo could maintain their sales while pumping out more quality games a year.
