1) Where did you say wii wasn't selling well?
You didn't.
I will give you the wii fit+ thingy, that was my error.
In this economic climate you will be happy if your company is still alive let alone turn over a profit. Get real. Don't you think every company in the world has revised their forecast due to the recession?
@trestres
I apolgise as for my comment about your statement being daft. Yes I can read but trying to work (or pretend to be working ) and reading\replying to these comments on at the same time on a computer that takes forever to bring up a window that was minimized (to hide the fact that I am on VGchartz and not working) can lead to errors, as it did on my part.
No problem, I understand that.

Tres tres tres.. Shall I take a stab?
Firstly I'd like to address Wii Fit Plus.. Now you are correct, Wii Fit Plus IS an expansion. That said, it's also important to realise that Wii Fit Plus will be taking over from Wii Fit, Wii Fit will be discontinued and Wii Fit Plus will take it's place bundled with the balance board. How is this important? Well there are probably 10's of Millions of people who are still interested in Wii Fit but not quite enough to warrant a purchase. If these people see that Wii Fit has been improved and now has 69 activities, these people are more likely to flock to the console and buy it these holidays. The new-ness of Wii Fit Plus will add to the likely hood of people who are already interested to jump in.
Next up, lets talk about these holidays.. There is something different about these holidays that has never happened in the Wii's lifecycle before.. Can you guess what that might be? Yeah that's right, the Wii has always been supply constrained during the holiday season and this will be the first year where that is not the case. That's one of the main ways that Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus will drive hardware sales, it'll add value to the console for people already interested and the ability to walk into the shop these holidays and buy a console and on of these titles is going really lift the Wii to it's best holiday season yet.
Now lets talk about Nintendo's strategy as a whole shall we? Lets take a look at Nintendo's year quater by quarter:
FY 2009
Q1 - 5,410,822 (launch of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii)
Q2 - 4,300,951
Q3 - 10,499,572 (launch of Wii Music and Animal Crossing)
Q4 - 4,866,192
FY 2010
Q1 - 2,713,878
Q2 - ??? (launch of Wii Sports Resort)
Q3 - ??? (launch of Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii)
Q4 - ???
Looking at those figures show quite clearly that Wii Music and Animal Crossing didn't keep the Wii's momentum going. It show's a few other things though. It shows that Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii pushed sales quite high in the quarter that they were released, it shows that even with their console pushing abilities they couldn't push Q2 sales over Q4 sales. This is even more astonishing when you consider the fact that Wii had a very weak holiday line up and so Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii were still the main console pushing software for Q4.
This is very different to FY 2010. Here's my take on what Nintendo probably are projecting and why a price cut isn't needed to get there.
After having little momentum out of the holidays Wii was destined to slow down until more hardware sellers were launched. This slow down happened a little quicker than most expected and was exasperated by the fact that Wii Sports Resort was delayed a few months. So YoY sales for Q1 went from 5.4M to 2.7M. It's important to note that this quarter saw the launch of two of the top four selling games this generation in 2008.
Finally Q2 rolls in with the launch of Wii Sports Resort. Wii sales currently down YoY from Q2 last year but this can be explained quite easily.
Basically Q2 is the slowest quarter all year for Wii sales as can be seen by the comparison between Q2 and Q4 in FY 2009. It also has to be noted that hardware selling software don't begin to make a real impact until at least a month from release, once Wii Sports Resort begins to really move hardware, Q2 FY 2010 will almost be over. One last point is that Super Smash Bros. Brawl launched around the same time as Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii and along with Mario Kart would have moved systems to the remaining fans of those series that hadn't yet picked up a Wii.
Now before I continue, I'd like to give you my projections:
FY 2010 Projections
Q1 - 2,713,878
Q2 - 3,900,000
Q3 - 13,500,000
Q4 - 6,000,000
These projections add up to roughly 26 Million and is most likely what Nintendo are expecting. Now lets take a look at why these aren't as out there as they seem.
Q3 FY 2009 - 10,499,572
Important points:
- Still supply constrained
- Headline titles were Wii Music and Animal Crossing
- Main sales drivers were Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii
Q3 FY 2010 - 13,500,000
Important points:
- A 3 Million YoY increase
- Hardware will be in good supply
- Headline titles will be New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Fit Plus
- Main sales drivers will be Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit Plus and Mario Kart Wii
Q4 FY 2009 - 4,866,192
- Hardware drivers Wii Music and Animal Crossing failed to become evergreen titles
- Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii were still the main reason to purchase the Wii
- 3 whole quarters after their release
Q4 FY 2009 - 6,000,000
- Hardware driver Wii Sports Resort will have been established as an evergreen title
- Hardware driver Wii Fit Plus will take over from Wii Fit as an evergreen title
- Hardware driver New Super Mario Bros. Wii will become an evergreen title in this quarter
So there is my analysis of the situation. Agree? Disagree? Let me know why.
OoSnap said: If Nintendo want to meet their fiscal projections of selling X number of Wiis I think it is a good idea to cut the price of the Wii. I also think with the PS3 soon to be just $50 above Wii's price tag I think it's going to take away a lot from Wii sales. And if the 360 price cut rumor turns out to be true I can see the Wii losing a lot of the marketshare at the end of the year. Or Nintendo should bundle the Wii with a motion plus and Wii Sports Resort and perhaps some other game to increase its value. They can also introduce several different colors to make it more appealing Nintendo shouldn't get too greedy and wait until next year to cut the price - get as many Wiis out there. The sooner the better for it will bring more third party love to the console. |
Nonsense
"Success really is decided at birth, and your life will never be better than it is right now. Sorry about that."
Disagree. Demand isn't as high as it used to be and that's a fact. Being supply constrained people were obligued to line up and get a Wii as soon as they could last year. Now it's different, as Wii's are in abundant supply. You won't see those gigantic sales anymore simply because anyone can buy a buy as soon as they want.
Then last year AC:CF and Wii Music weren't even important titles, the true movers were Wii Fit and MKWii like you said. Wii would have sold the same had they launched or not. Now this year, I think you are expecting too much from WSR and Wii Fit+. I already explained the part about Wii Fit+ and we disagree completely, as I don't think a 2 year old piece of SW will be able to move hardware like that. WSR hasn't had the expected effect so far, but according to Iwata it will begin moving HW 6 weeks after launch... They are expecting it to happen, not saying it will and those are 2 different things. Also, you are expecting NSMBWii to move several million Wii's on its own, and that's where I disagree the most. The Mario fanbase is already very big, it's not like this is the first Mario available or anything similar.
The sales then won't reflect what you expect to happen, simply because demand isn't there anymore as it used to be. I would make a bet about it if you like, but Wii won't sell 13.5 million units that quarter, because it's impossible. That would mean more than 1 million weekly since the start of October and you realize that's impossible, considering it's selling about 800k on average every month.
Then there's the fact that this year more than ever, Wii will be competing against 2 price cuts (if the 360 one is to be believed) and it will not have as many 3rd party hits as the other consoles.
I can't see Wii having a better Holiday when it's in a negative trend, it doesn't have as many hits as the other platforms and both their competitors are getting pricecuts and redesigns.
I also think 4 million isn't going to happen this quarter, because so far only 1.4 million were sold and we are almost halfway in the quarter. You are forgetting these figures are inflated because of the launch of MH3 in Japan and WSR in the West. Those peaks already wore away and instead of that 350k weekly figure we are back to 250k or so, and only because it's Obon in Japan as the Wii doesn't have anything else noteworthy until October there.
For the 4th quarter you are alos looking at things wrong... Wii sold so well in Q4 FY 09 because it was totally supply constrained during the Holidays, therefore many people ended up buying the console a month or two after the Holiday Season ended. This year Wii is in supply and there will be NO shortages this Holiday. Unless they have something big planned for Q1 2010, I don't see them shipping more than 4 million.
That's it, I guess.

They selling over 100K in Others alone! (thats like almost more/less the WW sales of PS3 or Xbox360). I think they're still doing well and dont need a price cut just yet.
You make some good points Tres, I didn't take supply constraints in Q3 into account for the sales of Q4.
However I disagree with your point about there being a lack of Wii demand at the moment. Nintendo's own research shows that there are 150 Million consumers across the globe that would consider buying a Wii or DS system. That's where I believe Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus will help the most, to get these people to actually take that step and purchase one.
Also about NSMBWii, 2D Mario titles always sell better than their 3D counterparts because they are far more accessable and mass market friendly. Have you already forgotten that New Super Mario Bros on DS is still a system seller? Have you already forgotten that Mario Kart Wii is still a system seller? There are plenty of kart fans but it's selling to players who previously were not kart fans.
Finally have you already forgotten that NSMBWii will support 4 players for co-op and competitive play? The first time in a Mario title that more than one player can play through the campaign at once and with a ranking system. NSMBWii will be just like NSMB for DS only it'll sell even better, just like Mario Kart Wii has sold even better than it's DS counterpart.
You underestimate these titles I think.
One last point, Iwata wants this holiday to be the biggest in Nintendo's history, I think 3 million more Wii consoles sold these holidays than last year would cement that. I think if needed, a black Wii or bundles will be made available.
