Well this got way off topic.. It was a simple "would it be possible to track Next Gen DVD's?" Topic. Oh and isn't funny how the PS3 people are saying that the console war isn't over even though there getting "trounced" Yet, when it comes to HD DVD vs Blu Ray, they say the opposite. That it's over, Blu Ray has HD DVD beat. Funny how people see things.

You heard that, huh? Good for you. Have you also heard that The Lord of the Rings is a New Line Cinema movie? They are owned by Time Warner just like Warner Bros. is. What does that mean? If it does come out it'll be in both formats unless they have given up on HD-DVD by then. Just like the Departed and other movies recently, it would probably sell better on blu-ray. This comparison to laser discs is ridiculous. You could not record using laser discs. That's why they didn't succeed. Contrary to all the talk about lack of porn on betamax being the reason it failed, the biggest reason was probably the fact that Sony didn't decrease the quality in order to have recording times longer than an hour at first. Can't record a sporting event with that. VHS didn't go away until TiVo and dvd recording.

People like to use this thing called logic. Have you ever seen a console war end in a few months? Has the PS3 launched in Europe yet? Is Home out yet? Is MGS4? FF13? LittleBigPlanet? God of War 3? Of course it's not over. It might as well be over for the 360 in Japan, but that's the only sure thing at this point. As for blu-ray...my gosh. HD-DVD came out first, sold more throughout the year last year, and it takes less than 2 months for blu-ray to catch up. You don't think that's a sign in blu-ray's favor? What is planned to slow down the success of blu-ray at this point? Almost every week another set of movies is released on blu-ray that is not on HD-DVD, every movie that is on both formats is selling much better on blu-ray now, and there are only going to be more and more PS3s and now a new $600 stand-alone player. Just look at eproduct wars, the signs are there.

HappySqurriel said: The comparison wasn't "UMD failed so Blu-Ray will fail" but was more about the initial optimism of a format (in particular a format attached to a gaming console) can be delusional. Many PSP owners probably bought a handful of UMD movies when their PSP was reasonably new because they wanted to try it out; as time went on the novelty of a new format wore off ... The same thing will happen to Blu-Ray and people will not buy movies like The Benchwarmers simply because they have a PS3 which happens to play Blu-Ray movies. (Basically they will be waiting for movies they actually want to own to come out) ... This will lower the dominance of sales that Blu-Ray currently has and sales will become more based on the "Quality" of the movies that are released for a format ...
Like staticneuron said, of course UMD was going to fail, it was inferior. I looked at the specs and never wanted one. The big difference is that UMD was only for the PSP, whereas blu-ray players are available as stand-alone players and computer drives.

Can someone just tell me what they except from HD-DVD that will turn the momentum back around? Seriously. I'd like to know, because no one from the HD-DVD camp has a plan. How can you compete with not having all the studios blu-ray has? It's impossible. Why would they switch support at this point? Instead of spouting the same misinformation, how about a real explanation for how HD-DVD is supposed to recover from the blow it is being dealt right now.

I don't feel like wasting my time with either HD DVD or Blu Ray...I don't buy a ton of DVDs as it is...I'd rather just stick with DVDs for ease right now. And I really do believe that these formats will become inferior to either higher capacity discs in the near future, or something else like downloads.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

It may or may not - if it doesn't I do not think it will be because of BluRay, I think it will be because very few people are interested in upgrading to either. I would also say some of those studios will jump ship if the PS3 continues to fail (for you to say HD DVD is going to fail after a two month down period, then I can call the PS3 a failure. Afterall, the Betamax/VHS battle was fought for nearly 10 years where I am sure both formats had their ups and downs and Sony had their muscling techniques back then as well). Anyway, how could they not expect BluRay to have a couple of good months with a million plus PS3 consoles newly on the market? I am sure there was some interest for PS3 owners to buy up a bunch of movies - particularly with the coupons that I believe I have read are in the PS3 box. I recently got the HD-DVD drive for the 360 and have purchase 4 or 5 movies in the past week. I suspect that will end as they are expensive and there is no need to have every movie in this format. If I want a comedy or non-visually spectacular movie there is no way I would blow money on an HD-DVD. Right now, there are about an equal amount of movies on each that are worth owning for the HD quality so I do not feel like I am missing anything by not having BluRay. Ultimately it doesn't matter to me as I got this as a toy to play with my HD TV and am happy with how regular DVDs look on it. Sure the HD DVDs look amazing, but the DVDs do not look bad. And I assure you that 99% of the people I know will have no interest in upgrading to either. People have invested so much money in DVD libraries so soon after VHS that they are not going to buy into this unless they have to. There are people who still use VHS and have been slow to convert to DVD - to ask them to do this so soon? Forget it! Plus the people who are going Pay Per View and downloading... I find it increasingly fascinating how upset people are getting about this format and the console battle. It is making great reading material!

The studio's know the market intergration of HD. These companies are not going to base who is a victor off of who does not have an HDTV. Situations are relative but I am shocked to still hear this. Betamax and blu ray are polar opposites. Blu ray has more in line with VHS in terms of support, licensing, runtime/space and overall goal. At the CES of this year, it was claimed that an average of 6 br movies were sold per PS3 owner. I highly doubt that many movies are because of coupons and the growing attach ratio is not in line with the opinion that this is a phase. I find it fascinating to see people assume that they have a better grasp of the situation than these billion dollar companies................... that have been around longer than most of us have lived.
