Forums - Sony - Killzone- bad guys have more appeal!?!

Bad guys in games are usually cooler.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

@Phobos.
not my opinion on the matter lol. but if people think the helgast look cool. and theyre based on nazis? You see my logic yes?

The good guys are your average hard boiled tough American Marines. Pretty bland.

The bad guys have glowing orange eyes and metal suits. Iconic.

Basically, the Helghast are 10 times as awesome as Sev, Rico, Garza and...that other guy.

When the game designers created the Killzone universe, they looked at their planet and it's history for inspiration.

Germany felt as though it was under constant attack from the West before WWII, and they deeply resented the Treaty of Versailles. The way that Germany felt could be mirrored by the Helghast and there resentment toward other human colonies due to the way that they were being treated.

Germany got hit hard by the economic depression, it was also destyoed by WWI, other events such as the invasion of the Ruhr, hyperinflation, political uprisings from across the spectrum, the country was falling apart, and living standards were dropping fast. Helghan isn't exactly the nicest planet in the galaxy to live in.

Visari shows many parallels to Hitler in the way he gives speeches, his aims, and his way of leading. The speechs at the start of Killzone and Killzone 2 shows that the used similar styles of propaganda to Hitler.

The way the Helghast army present themselves is also incredibly similar to the way the German army did so. The German army often wore superlative uniforms and was overly-cautious about presentation and showing order.

So, yeah, I pretty much agree with your conclusion about the inspirations for Killzone.

Why, then does everybody have Helghast avatars and signatures? Well, because they look so damned awesome, is why.

^this. great post man

Helgasts are the real star of the game, they're like mascots. Concerning WWII, they kinda remind me nazi too. It was pretty revelant when I played the demo: in the second part, you hear two helgasts speaking. I know it's not nazi relative, but it reminds me of old european movies about WWII.

Killzone 2 FTW.

Killzone's enemy design was lifted straight from an anime and live action series of movies collectively known as the Kerberos Saga, which debuted in the late 80s and Jinroh being the latest production being released in 1999. The protect gear was based off of samurai armor, especially the outfit used in Jinroh. www.animecubed.com/galleries/jinroh/jrh059.jpg.shtml www.animecubed.com/galleries/jinroh/jrh048.jpg.shtml www.animecubed.com/galleries/jinroh/jrh034.jpg.shtml

Fixed.

I think Samuel has already given a good explanation of the background and plot link of the Helghast with regards to the Nazis, but in term of art direction, the Helghast mostly certainly paid a nod toward's Mamoru Oshii's Jin-Roh:

I think the story is interesting because both sides really mess up. The Helghast kind of brought themselves down from causing conflict, but then it's the ISA/Earth's fault because they wanted to pretty much get rid of the Helghast by screwing them over after the Helghast uprising was quelled. That caused some terrorist acts by some Helghast, which led to very strict measures against them and caused them to pool their wealth to flee to Helghan. Earth and the ISA hoped that the Helghast would perish and continued to screw them over, which then finally leads to the events of the games.

In a way, I kind of feel bad for the Helghast because even though they started the chain of events (though that's because they weren't challenged by Earth until things went out of hand), they were pretty much neglected and expected to perish when they left for Helghan.

Hmmm... they do remind me of Nazi's... and look at the flags!!
