Forums - Gaming Discussion - The 7th Generation Fanboy Treaty

@Ender

Sony did not develope Lair, Factor 5 did. Last time I checked Patapon, Loco Roco, Echocrome, SingStar and many other games developed by Sony were fun for everyone.

The time has come for console fanboy understanding and compromise.  As an owner of all systems, I Ender, intend broker an epic multilateral console fanboy treaty.  I understand this won’t be easy, and it will require sacrifice on all sides, however the time for peace has come.  Without further a due, the following is the outline of the 7th Generation Fanboy Treaty:

My thoughts:

1.1 - I think its a good thing, but I can understand why hardcore would not. Devopment money that might have been spent on them could end up elsewhere. (though one would hope that the growth of the industry would result in the pie just getting bigger, and HC still getting their fill even if its split more ways)

1.2 - This is pure opinion; the fact I agree with you doesn't change that.

1.3 - I think we will all gain next gen from this; no console will launch for over $300 for at least a gen, maybe two.

1.4 - Depends on what you are looking for. It does exactly what I want, though I understand why hardcore hate it.

1.5 - This is pure opinion; I find a year with Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Wii Fit, and Animal Crossing strong.

1.6 - I think most would agree, but that many wii fans, myself included won't rule out a comeback by the wii till at least the end of 2010.

1.7 - Really? Why?

2.1 - Its fair to say that the 360 gets maligned at times unfairly, but this "no matter what your gaming tastes are.." is completely untrue. Just as an example, all my wife plays are WiiFit, Mario Party, and Wii Sports Bowling. How would Xbox meet her needs?

2.2 - When just a couple of month ago general setiment was exactly the opposite, why would you expect consensus on this?

2.3 - Fair enough.

2.4 - The fact it is the only one to charge will likely always be a point of contention.

2.5 - OK

2.6 - First and foremost, MS are business geniuses.

2.7 - Now that's really getting away from your original intent.

2.8 - Again, who is buying a console for DVD playback in 2008?

3.1 - Opinion again.

3.2 - I'll grant that many people truly appreciate this, if you grant that many more don't care.

3.3 - For the hardcore.

3.4 - OK.

3.5 - There are very few here (myself included) who are qualified to have an opinion on who is to blame; most people just recycle quotes they've heard elsewhere, or give random guesses.

3.8 - Depends on what the truth of 3.5 is. It certainly would be odd for them to have put in such expensive HW if its not actually capable of greatness (even if only in theory).

3.9 - Do we know what Sony expected or are we attributing the fanboys opinions to the company?

3.10 - A completely reasonable person can think a lot of things...

Wii Agreements

Article 1.1 -- Your sales supremacy will be acknowledged.  At no time will other console owners refer to the Wii’s success as an anomaly, fad or gimmick.  Additionally, the Wii hardware will be credited with innovative design, which captured the imagination of the general public.   We will also agree that the Wii’s ability to bring gaming to a wider audience is a good thing. Agreed

Article 1.2 --  We agree Nintendo has the best first party development house.  What makes them so special is they can please gamers of ALL experience levels (including “hardcore”) .  I know this will be a particularly tough compromise for some fanboys however please keep reading, remember, we must find common ground. Maybe.

Article 1.3 –- We appreciate Nintendo offering their console for $250 at launch.  We hope that other console makers take note. Fine.. gr...

Article 1.4 -- The Wii’s online service is awful Hell yes!

Article 1.5 -- The Wii’s 08 lineup was disappointing. Yup.

Article 1.6 -- The Wii’s 3rd party title offerings are the worst of this generation’s consoles. Definitely.

Article 1.7 –- The Wii’s lack of dvd playback is disappointing. Very much so.

Good so far...
360 Agreements

Article 2.1
-- We will agree the 360 has the deepest gaming catalog of any console.  No matter what your gaming tastes are, the 360 will continues to deliver quality content with its solid exclusive line-up and superior 3rd party support.  Because of this, going forward the 360 will not be referred to as a “shooterbox”. Absolutely not! It's opinion, if you don't like shooters, the 360 library is't great, there's no denying that! Even if it isn't a shooterbox, it does have many shooters.

Article 2.2 --  Sales wise, the 360 has won the HD console war.  I understand this is a tough sticking point, but the data suggest this is true.  If events radically change we can revisit this point, however going forward there will be no more mention of an HD sales race.  It’s over. No, it isn't. It's $400 vs. $200.

Article 2.3 -- Judging by games currently released, there is little evidence suggest that the 360 is a graphically superior or inferior console. At this point in time, yes.

Article 2.4 -- XBOX Live provides the best online gaming experience.   It’s easy to use and feature rich.   Definitely.

Article 2.5 -- Games built for the 360 and PC only will be referred to as a “console exclusive”. Please, yes.

Article 2.6 -- Microsoft nickel and dimes you to death, which really drives up the overall costs of the system.  Paying for things like online play and wireless internet is completely annoying. True.

Article 2.7
-- The 360 is a noisy and unreliable piece of junk.  Additionally, it’s completely reasonable not to trust the new jasper build. That being said, we must acknowledge Microsoft did the right thing by extending their warrantee to 3 years. ...

Article 2.8 -- The 360’s DVD playback is serviceable, but not good. Agreed.

PS3 Agreements

Article 3.1 -- Unlike it’s awful previous years (2006, 2007); in 2008 the PS3 offered the best combination of exclusives and 3rd party titles.  Additionally, we will acknowledge 2009 looks to be another strong year for PS3 exclusives.  On the other hand, due to the PS3’s disappointing console sales and development difficulties, we acknowledge there is a good chance we’ll see a drop-off in 3rd party support with small to mid-tier releases. I agree with the first part.

Article 3.2 -- The PS3’s dvd and blu-ray playback is breathtakingly beautiful. Yes it is.

Article 3.2 -- The PS3’s $399 price tag, is a horrible blunder.  For most families, asking to shell out this kind of money with NO packaged games is unacceptable.  On the other hand, we acknowledge if you are interested in blu-ray, wireless internet, hardware reliability and free online play, the PS3 offers a significant value over the other two consoles. True.

Article 3.3 -- Sony offers the best free online play. Well, it's competing against the Wii, so yes.

Article 3.4 -- Just because Home is in beta doesn’t mean it can’t be criticized.  And let’s be frank, after years of development there’s embarrassingly a lot to criticize. I suppose.

Article 3.5 -- We no longer blame “lazy developers” for the PS3’s programming difficulties.  Sony deserves all the blame. Not really. If Kojima, Naughty Dog and the Oblivion team can handle the PS3, anyone can.

Article 3.8 –- Sony exaggerated the PS3’s graphical capabilities. 4D. Obviously.

Article 3.9 -- LittleBigPlanet’s sales were solid, but below Sony’s expectations. We don't know what Sony's expectations were.

Article 3.10 -- A completely reasonable person can find MSG4 to be obnoxious and annoying. No they can't.

I understand not everyone will agree with every single point, but I think this is a good compromise.  Feel free to sign the treaty and add any feedback.

1.2 I will NEVER agree with. I think it goes Sony > Nintendo > Microsoft for 1st party.

All nintendo has is the same ones its had since the NES/N64 days which is Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. Sony on the other hand keeps growing its first party/exclusives. Resistance, Uncharted, Motorstorm are examples for new Sony IP's from this gen.

Plus Sony still has the same ones from previous gens like Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone, God of War, etc

I think you mean Nintendo doesn't make new IPs that interest you, because they're making tons of new IPs.  Isn't it new casual Nintendo IPs that are destroying the industry?  Nintendogs is from this gen.  So is Brain Training.  The Wii Sports/Play/Fit/Music franchise is new.  Captain Rainbow, Disaster, the Bit Generations stuff like Orbital and SoundVoyager and their Art Style cousins on WiiWare, Elektroplankton, and a bunch of stuff.

yeah my bad i meant to say none that interest me. Wii sports is cool and brain training, but nothing else interests people like me who like action/FPS/racing/sports games

I disagree with many of them, this so called "Fanboy-Agreement" looks like it has alot of Xbox 360 Bias in it.

So no...

Sorry but can't agree with:

Article 3.5 -- We no longer blame “lazy developers” for the PS3’s programming difficulties.  Sony deserves all the blame.

Article 3.7 –- The PS3’s interface is dour and ugly.

Article 3.8 –- Sony exaggerated the PS3’s graphical capabilities.

Being a programmer myself there are alot of really bad lazy programmers out there, im not yet convinced PS3 programming is so difficult that good programmers couldn't get the job done just as well as any PC/X360 or Wii programmer could do.

The XBAR is the best interface of the three imo. So there you go.

I think the graphics thus far have hit the mark, now I am more than willing to concede that fanboy boasting that graphics is the be all end all and that wii capabilities were sure to doom it into obscurity were dumb exaggerations.

Edit:

You seem to be missing 3.6.

Also i'd be more than willing to concede an article

Article 3.6 -- PS3's blu-ray capabilities have hurt it more than helped it due to driving up the price.

article 3.8 is true...they have done it every generation, ps2 emotion engine will deliver near photo relaistic graphics rember that one.  I will say this they know how to hype there system though so 3.8 is true and should stay

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Xbox live:mywiferocks

I'd like to submit that anything points relating to DVD playback are completely irrelevant - if you're the type of person who doesn't have a DVD player yet (at the cripplingly expensive price of $25-$30 - GASP!) you probably don't own a current generation video game systems which I imagine you probably think is something only millionaires can afford.

I don't have room for dvd-player so I use my 360 as one. So it is not completely irrelevant. ;)
