Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo will not fix the storage problem

OK, so, my friend has a bunch of VC games & puts them on his SD card. If he comes over, can we play those VC games on my Wii? Moreover, can i transfer those games over to my Wii?

Naw, thats what they are trying to prevent, the reason why it's going to take them so long to get the firmware update out.

...From what I understand from ramuji's translation is they are looking to make the transfer process faster as well. Which will be great cause like everyone has noted it takes the Wii a long time to read/write to a SD card, cause of the encoding being done in the process.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

Sorry for the length of this post, but I thought some of you might be interested in what Mr. Iwata actually said at the conference in Tokyo. Below is my translation of what he said regarding the storage issue (from the text of his speech provided on the Nintendo website):

Recently, SD memory cards have become extremely inexpensive, and we recognize there is an issue with the current usability of SD memory cards when the Wii's internal memory becomes full. While listening to the needs of our customers, Nintendo has been researching the best method for improving user-friendliness without sacrificing the security of the Wii. While it will require some more time for us to resolve these issues, I am happy to report to you today that we have decided upon the solution to be implemented.

As a result of our research, we have decided to make 2 changes to resolve these issues. First, when the Wii's internal memory is full, you will be able to download Wii software such as channels, virtual console games, and Wii Ware games from the Shopping Channel directly onto an SD memory card. Second, you will be able to copy Wii software from an SD memory card to the Wii's internal memory with one easy operation. The update required to achieve this structure will require major changes to the system, and therefore will require multifaceted and thorough validation. I suspect there will be many people who feel that our response is too slow, but we plan to be able to provide this update to our customers in the spring of next year. Please understand that we plan to hurry the development of this update in order to provide this important solution as soon as possible.

There. It seems I was right after all, even though I really didn't want to be. Next time, don't flame me for posting the truth please.

I'm pretty good with the solution if they build in a better manager and increase the rate at which the transfers happen. Currently it's a bit slow for 40mb WiiWare.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Because they knew it was the truth when they were flaming you... oh wait they didn't. You just posted what you assumed without any actual confirmation. That isn't posting the truth, even if it later turns out to be right, because you didn't have proof you were right at the time. You just assumed lack of proof was proof of a lack, which is not logical, nor truthful.

I think you can boot directly from the SD cards. Why else would this be an announcement if it wasn't in any way different from what we can currently do.

It is different, the new feature is that you can download games directly onto your SD card, but it is nowhere confirmed that you can also load games from SD card. In fact, Iwata literaly said this makes it easier to transfer games from SD card to your Wii.

Obviously, this isn't a proper solution to the storage problem.

Of course you'll be able to play them directly from the SD slot. Like megaman said, why else would they even announce this. It's not like anyone wants to download games directly to SD if you can´t play them from there.

The fact that he mentioned you can download channels to the SD card speaks volumes to me--why would they go to great lengths to allow you to download channels (which they want you to check every day) onto a device that's inconvenient to use every day?

So, uh, what's the consensus? That the OP's information is incorrect? And that if it is correct, it's completely useless, right?

It turns out there will be no direct play from SD cards at the moment, but they apparently couldn't be used as full storage devices before.

SD cards are dog slow as HDD substitutes. Also, they get slower, the bigger you make them, as I recall. A 32GB SD card would probably be downright awful to play games from.

I think I have figured this out -- what Nintendo's plan is.

Basically, Nintendo plans to (1) DL directly to SD card and (2) improve transfer rate when moving game from SD card to memory.

What I think this means is (1) when you load the game to an SD card, you get a marker loaded to your Wii memory (like a cookie) and (2) when you want to play a game, you can -- if you have that cookie -- quickly load it from the SD card to the Wi memory. If it only takes seconds to transfer a game from SD to Wii-mem (instead of the near-eternity it does now), it is an improvement.

Admittedly, if I am right, then so is the OP. However, my take on it is a bit more optimistic and shows that Nintendo is trying to make things work better -- but is just a victim of its own success. (It has sold much more than it thought it would and DL content is huge).

Personally, I don't mind the current refrigerator method. What I DO mind are games that won't let you transfer their save files to an SD card -- like the 119 block Elebits save file. Those are much worse for system memory than the DLs.
