^ I think they mean units sold within a period of time wise. Otherwise yea, Nintendo has always had the crown... if otherwise means innovation that has defined the industry.
I'm Unamerica and you can too.

Firstly... the 140 million has now been proved as a mistake.... Sony has only shipped 130-131 million PS2s (and I believe that also includes any that were sent as replacements for faulty early models)
So the sum total of Sony console hardware is 246-248 million, add in PSP and get 284-286 million units.
Nintendo has shipped 195 million console units (Wii will be reported as around 30 million in a couple of days) and over 275 million handhelds, for a sum total of 470 million hardware units.
The argument however doesn't make sense, because we are talking about now, not the past, if you would read The Sources post, the article is probably referring to the fact that this fiscal year, Nintendo is on track to sell more console units than Sony, unlike last fiscal where the combined PS2+PS3 was still more than the Wii (plus a few GCs)

sony lost its crown lol
both ps3 and 360 are towering infernos over what the wii can offer to core gamers.
...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...
PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk
really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I think, many might disagree.

Why disagree when you could just envoke a different definition of "towering inferno"?
towering inferno (noun)

The console was expected to launch in a year when he became the corporate CEO. Even though it was delayed an additional six months. That is still a short period of time to kill a project that far along in development, and negotiation. Sony had already spent a very hefty sum on the console, and its components. Hell they were already into a manufacturing process by that point. There comes a time when no matter how bad the idea is you are already so vested into the idea that it is worse to walk away then move forward. Let alone the fact that they had to produce a console. So cutting the PS3 at that late stage would mean a return to the drawing board, and perhaps leaving the industry entirely. Not to mention the political fallout he would have to endure for making a very unpopular decision. All in all there were better options, but perhaps Sony can come out the other side when it comes to the PS3. I honestly doubt the losses were acceptable from the standpoint of the PS2. However they are a hell of a lot better then having no console, and no Trojan horse for at least one of their technologies. There is a difference between utter failure, and a major failure. |
You are absolutely correct on this one. When Stringer came in in June, 2005, it was far, FAR too late to change Blu-ray or the PS3. He had no choice but to go through with them. And whether you guys want to admit it or not, Stringer saved Sony. IMO, he's the second-most brilliant CEO of the last 50 years. (with only Lou Gerstner beating him; and Stringer even asked Gerstner for advice on many occasions) If Stringer had been the CEO when Sony was planning the PS3, I don't think even the Wii would have unseated them. (heh. oops. I'm starting to "what if") Anyway, whoever is to blame for what happened with the PS3, it's definitely NOT Howard Stringer.
Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

I love how they include the PSP but not the DS
