The 250m figure is not even correct.

Figures from this site:

PS1: 100 million or so, PS2: 115 million or so, PS3: 14 milllion or so, PSP: 35 million or so....that's, 264 million and i rounded down.

But the 420 million figure is higher, no doubt there.

PS1 sold 102 million

PS2 sold 140 million

are you a gamer ?

Firstly... the 140 million has now been proved as a mistake.... Sony has only shipped 130-131 million PS2s (and I believe that also includes any that were sent as replacements for faulty early models)

So the sum total of Sony console hardware is 246-248 million, add in PSP and get 284-286 million units.
Nintendo has shipped 195 million console units (Wii will be reported as around 30 million in a couple of days) and over 275 million handhelds, for a sum total of 470 million hardware units.

The argument however doesn't make sense, because we are talking about now, not the past, if you would read The Sources post, the article is probably referring to the fact that this fiscal year, Nintendo is on track to sell more console units than Sony, unlike last fiscal where the combined PS2+PS3 was still more than the Wii (plus a few GCs)
