Do you feel ready for next gen to arrive soon?

Next month it will be 6 years since the release of PS5 and Xbox Series X. By this long after the release of the PS3, it was late 2012 with PS4/XBO around the corner, and by this long after the release of PS4/XBO it was late 2019 with the PS5/Xbox Series also just a year off.

This time around however, an extended crossgen period and factors just as the pandemic distorting our sense of time, things feel quite different for a lot of people.

For those who play on PS5 and Xbox Series, do you feel ready for the next gen to arrive soon, or do you feel it's much too soon as the current gen would keep you satisfied for a while yet?

I'm not ready. I think it's my age. Time goes fast when your 36. Console generations pass in a blink of an eye. I got my PS5 at the end of 2023. I haven't played many games this gen and my PSVR 2 sits looking at me. I've not played the majority of games I want to play yet and still see it as a new console lol

P.S. I still see the PS4 as a new console too XD

I have (or have/had in the household): ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga, NES, Sega Master System, Super Nintendo, Sega Megadrive, Gameboy, Playstation, Nintendo 64, Windows 95, Gameboy Colour, Windows 98, Sega Dreamcast, Gameboy Advance, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Windows XP, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, Windows Vista, iPhone, Windows 7, 3DS, Wii U, PS4, Windows 10, PSVR, Switch, NES Mini, SNES Mini, Zelda Edition Game&Watch, PS5, PSVR2 & Switch 2. :D

and I Don't have: Magnovox Odyssey, Any Atari's, Any Macintosh computers, Sega Gamegear, Virtual Boy, Sega Saturn, N-gage, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PSP, PSVita & Andoid Phone. Plus any non-mainstream consoles/platforms I haven't mentioned.

It feels like we haven't really tapped into the current consoles and seen what they can really do. Speaking for myself at least, I feel like Sony exclusives have mostly been lackluster or absent because of their stupid pursuits. Add to that the current price crisis, diminishing returns and whatnot, why would we need or want to move on to the next round?

Got a PS5 in Jan 2022 then upgraded to a PS5 Pro in Dec 2025.

I’m perfectly happy with this gen continuing until 2029/2030 to maximise its full potential.

I'm not sure I qualify as a PS player as it's my secondary console at best but for my part not even a little bit. Honestly not excited for future technology at all. I know I seem like a downer but the smaller the visible increases become the more ridicolous it starts to feel to spend money and resources on continous upgrades just for the sake of it. Phones reached that point long ago and it feels like consoles have finally gotten there as well.

From a first party standpoint, it’s been a complete disappointment from both. I don’t know what the fuck Sony has been on this gen but it culminating in one of my favourite studios releasing one of my most hated games I’ve ever played. We need a good 4-5yrs longer of this gen before I even consider caring for next gen.

I'm not buying any new consoles ever again.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Not only am I not ready, I'm done. lol. Game-key cards, all-digital Playstations, AI-created games... not for me. I'll stick to retro.

I mainly game on PC now, but I do own a Series S. Considering the price of memory and storage now would be a bad time to launch a new console. It would either need to be more powerful than the current consoles or be a handheld version with similar specs to what we have now. Like the Wii U to the Switch.

Sony and Microsoft should wait until 2028 at the earliest. Unless they are willing to subsidize it heavily.

PS5 player here who got one nearly two years after launch in 2022.
November 2028 is the absolute earliest Sony should launch PS6. And I'm more inclined to think March 2029-November 2030 is a better range. Tech prices are cooked for the foreseeable future, and a lot of pricing is as well, and big video game spending doesn't have a guarantee as recession-proof.
Gaming graphics have reached a relative plateau in resolution and polygons. 5K and up is pretty niche on Gaming PCs, and PS5 Pro only has a small amount of 8K titles itself.
4K60FPS will be more common PS6 than PS5 Pro, and there will probably be more 120FPS support for 4K games and games between 1080p and 4K.
A lot of games take so long to make that even though I expect a cross-gen period anyway, the 7-year cycle is dead for now. Switch 2 probably won't even need to be replaced in 2032 relative to benefits of a new system and costs.
It would be wonderful for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to last long enough to where their prices go down to at least their launch prices, if not below.
