Certain long running series have gotten into the habit of remaking older entries and selling them as premium experiences, often in parallel with brand new entries in that same series.

Different series take different approaches to this. Which is your favorite?

Off the top of my head major series that put out consistent remakes include Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Dragon Quest, Silent Hill, etc.

Depends.

I appreciate Capcom's approach of reimagining classic games but modernising their gameplay and structure as it makes them feel fresh again and almost like an all new experience.

On the other hand, there are some games, like say Metroid Prime, where I feel the direct 1:1 approach with modern graphics works better in preserving the original experience while making it more accessible.

I went with Resident Evil, Capcoms work on the RE: Remakes has been fantastic, especially there ability to release well done remakes in a quick time frame. There work on 2 and 4 is of special note.

Resident Evil.

I greatly prefer transformative remakes that don’t supercede the original, but provide a complementary experience.

With that said, I feel like Resident Evil has this on lockdown for the foreseeable future. The remakes of 1, 2, and 4 are excellent. I even like 3. And Veronica is on the way.

I’d put Metroid on the shortlist as well. Zero Mission is one of the best Nintendo games ever, portable or otherwise; and it’s a huge improvement over the original Metroid. Samus Returns is another example of a remake done right.

While I cannot answer to the quality of the games personally as I haven’t played almost anything listed here, I do really like the approach Zelda team has to their remakes: i.e., to train young talent and remind the old guard just what made old entries so special, and how they could be implemented in modern releases.

ATM and in your list, Resident Evil.

I don't really like direct 1:1 remakes. Super Mario RPG on Switch was a good remake, but since I've watched all the animated cutscenes, I don't feel like playing it, because visual upgrade alone doesn't make it worthy in my opinion.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was amazing, so was Resident Evil 2. Capcom is doing an great job with the reimaginations of the classic RE games, and I feel like the conclusion of FF7R will blow expectations.

I love RE games in general but I think people are overhyping every single release. They're far from being perfect and they don't take that much risks anymore. It's far simpler to remake an RE game than a FF one. I prefer bold games that still hold to a certain quality level rather than conventionnal ones.

Voted Resident Evil, feels like the obvious choice.

But I gotta give som credit to the Pokémon games. There are a few bad apples, but generally the remakes are so good (or at least on the same level as original games) that one does not even think of them as remakes, just as another Pokémon game.
