In some positive industry news, speaking with outlet Coelho, a Nintendo spokesperson has stated that "there’s no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well, so our position has been to be agnostic.”

But as the games getting bigger, how is a 256Gb built-in storage enough?

Nintendo dominates Japan and Japan loves physical. Go to any Hard Off/Book Off store and just aisles and aisles of games from any era as well as books and movies. Consoles. Old PCs whatever. Nintendo won't abandon that yet. The US may see less of them tho even from first party.

I didn't think they would. It would be leaving a lot of money and free advertising on the table.
A big chunk of Nintendo's revenue comes from the consumer gifting market. Parents who are gifting to children look more at the monetary value and physical nature of the product, rather than any inherent value (and most of the time, children don't know any better, other than, 'I got a gift worth X amount! Therefore I won't throw tantrums!'
It also helps that their products are given high shelf visibility at brick and mortar locations. That's passive zero-cost advertising.
Another advantage is Nintendo's proprietary media (game cards) which they sell to third party publishers as a means to sell their more highly priced software → instant revenue for Nintendo.
There is also the adult collector niche, which I know has several people on this forum who partake. And Sony has basically just handed that market almost exclusively to Nintendo. Even anti-Nintendo people who don't want to bite the bullet on console gaming have been changing their views on Nintendo as a result of this.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
GKCs kinda signal though that they are heading in the direction of getting rid of physical, since GKCs are a halfway step towards that already. Next step will be release a digital-only model (this gen or next gen).
In 20 years you will still have people saying "they will go all digital eventually." Then 20 years after that they will say the same thing again.
I predict a world where nintendo never abandons physical.
Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

It will likely be boutique offerings if they don't abandon physical. Almost no chance in the 2040s and on they will make millions and millions of physical copies for a title. I'd say that will be pretty unlikely even by 2036.
The lesser evil Sony could've picked is still allowing 2028 and on new releases to still have a disc copy but just limited runs.
Lifetime Sales Predictions
Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)
PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)
Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)
Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)
PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

I just dont believe it is that set in stone. There is a market for it. I dont see that changing. Its hard for me to imagine that Nintendo just wouldnt offer that.

If their commitment to physical is the key card system, then why bother? Either you make actual physical copies of the games, or you don't. Key cards are some of the worst e-waste I've seen. Still, I hope these disappear over time, and they just make regular cartridges.
