While I expect a lot of us got out first console from our parents as kids, what was the first console you bought for yourself, and what made you choose that one?

My first console that I bought with my own money was the Nintendo 3DS. At the time I was recently working at my first job at the time so I was starting to make some income. One day after soccer practice, I decided to drive over to Target curious to see because I remember how the day after the console price would be reduced to $170 and those who bought 3DS before then would be part of the ambassador program which gave them 10 NES and 10 GBA games. So I was looking at the 3DS section at target and I saw that the prices were cut earlier. So I decided to buy a black Nintendo 3D And was able to register to be part of the program for $170. I didn’t get a game with it because my 18th birthday was happening soon, but at least I had those AR games to mess around with to pass the time. And for my 18th birthday, my family got me Ocarina or Time 3D and Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D
My first was the Game Boy Color. Peak Pokemon mania, mowed neighbors yards throughout the summer of 2000 to get it. Just in time for the launch of Gold and Silver. Although I originally got it for Blue and Red lol.
My first home console I bought was the Halo 3 edition 360. Had to be ready for the launch of Halo 3!

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind
I bought a PS3 because I really wanted to play Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Switch 1. Used my YouTube money. (I ran a YouTube channel throughout muddle school. I had a few thousand saved up, and I didn’t have a holiday or birthday to pay off such a hefty investment.)
Why I chose Switch 1? I can’t fully remember TBH. I think it was a mixture of wanting the system for SMOdyssey, playing Skylanders Imaginators on-the-go, and being an adolescent who thought any and every innovation was a reality altering event. (That and FOMO. The system was selling out everywhere and I wanted to say that I got my hands on a system.)

The PS2 was the first console I bought myself, and the reason was Final Fantasy X, plain and simple.
N64 maybe? I traded in my SNES and a load of games, although I hadn't bought the SNES myself (Christmas gift) so, I guess that wasn't my money?
If not, then it was possibly the GameCube (although again, might have got a lot of money for that from selling the aforementioned N64), so if not that, then it was definitely the Wii (I remember checking a website for stock alerts for that one).
I've always opted for Nintendo consoles over anything else (although generally had access to others through my brothers, friends etc).
The first console I bought with my own money was a PlayStation. I chose it mainly because of the games available on it and the overall gaming experience. It felt great finally buying a console with money I had earned myself.
PSone in 2002. Saved up for that system quite a lot, and the PS2 was already out, but I live in Romania, so even that system was quite expensive for our living standards back then. I payed extra to get it modded day and date and bought 3 pirated games. In those days you could do that directly in the store. Loved that system. Ended up owning around 60 games on it and used it as my main system until I bought a PC and a little later a PSP.
First system that I bought with actual income was a PSVita in 2012. That was also my first ever "big" purchase and I thought it was the most exquisite experience ever.

Sega Dreamcast. Got it for Soulcalibur, although It hunk I actually ended up playing Sonic Adventure first. The game that really got me was Skies of Arcadia, but that was a bit later. Dreamcast was turning out to be quite the RPG machine, but it also seemed like I was one of the only ones buying games for it. At the time, it looked like piracy was probably the last major thing that killed Sega, even before it killed all the record shops… I mean, it was on top of a previously failed generation and a declining arcade sphere. Kind of the perfect storm of disasters. Was a sad time to be a Sega fan because it felt like they did everything right that generation.
The last console my parents bought for me (well, the family, all my consoles before I moved out at 18 were family consoles) was a replacement PSX. One of the big clunky ones.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
