Forums - Gaming - What Are Some Of Your Favorite Games of the 2020s?

With how old and grumpy so many are on this site, I have become curious: What are some recent releases that you had a really fun time with? Some of my favorites from the past six years consist of:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
2. Pikmin 4
3. Mario Kart World
4. Mina the Hollower
5. Super Mario Bros Wonder
6. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
7. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
8. Astro Bot
9. Metroid Dread, Animal Well [Two-Way Tie.]
10. Splatoon Raiders, Star Fox (Remake), Kirby Air Riders [Three-Way Tie.]

(With the Ocarina of Time remake, Kirby and the World Beyond, Metroid Raveneous, and Spyro: A Realm Beyond on the horizon, yeah this list is about to become outdated lol.)

Hmmm, if it had to be 10, it would be

1) Half-Life: Alyx
2) Cyberpunk 2077
3) It Takes Two
4) Baldur's Gate 3
5) Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
6) Splatoon Raiders
7) Astro Bot
8) Tempest Rising
9) Doom Eternal
10) Hi-Fi Rush

There's certainly some honorable mentions as well as games I just haven't been able to play yet, but it's still been a great time!

BG3 and HiFi are two that I need to get around to some day. Would love to try It Takes Two though I usually like to game in private (plus I... um... I'll just say that I am formally diagnosed with a disorder that makes verbal communication a little challenging for me. Some FireBush03 lore for ya lol).

Also love to see Splatoon Raiders on there! I really liked that game, I just got a little impatient around the 40-hour-mark. I don't like spending more than a month on a single game.

Always interesting getting some lore behind some of the users on the site!

Great games! I think you'd probably enjoy Hi-Fi Rush the most, based on the kinds of games you enjoy.

What are you doing spending 40 hours in Raiders, though? I'm finishing the main game tonight. I've done every single raid available, including the compass-guided dungeons, and have done every higher-level spicy raid, and I just passed the 15 hour mark of the game.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

1. Elden Ring
2. Yakuza: Like A Dragon
3. The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom
4. Resident Evil 4 Remake
5. Balatro
6. Dead Space Remake
7. Demons Souls Remake
8. Ender Lilies: Quietus Of The Knights
9. Rhythm Paradise Groove
10. Super Mario RPG Remake

Not 100% sure about the placements, but close enough.

Doom Eternal was an absolute blast.

Monster Hunter Rise combined the thrill of the hunt with cool new elements like advanced movement and a great sense of style, my #2 greatest Switch game behind only BOTW.

Metroid Dread played like a dream and made Samus a total badass.

Turbo Overkill is pure adrenaline and for my money one of the greatest FPS titles ever made.

Donkey Kong Bananza made smashing stuff endlessly fun and the creativity on show was top tier.

My list probably looks something like this:

  1. Cities: Skylines II: It's deeply flawed, but still, the improvements over the first game have 100% killed the first game for me, and it's one of my most played games ever.
  2. Astro Bot: Surprisingly good.
  3. Ghost of Tsushima: I was definitely interested in the game even beforehand, but it was still a positive surprise.
  4. Ghost of Yotei: At this point, there was no surprise anymore, but it was still a thoroughly enjoyable game. It's probably a better game than Ghost of Tsushima, but you can make a first impression only once.
  5. Alan Wake II: Some of the changes they made compared to the first game are for the better, some for the worse, but it's equally memorable. Lived up to the expectations.
  6. Farthest Frontier: It's just a survival city builder at its finest. There's nothing special about this one, it's just really well made.
  7. Crusader Kings III: If you know what Crusader Kings is about, this one shouldn't need an explanation. I only wish I had more time for this game.
  8. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: This might be the best Ratchet & Clank game yet. It's still not perfect, but the overall quality is just really high compared to the other games in the series, which often had clear weak points.
  9. Cyberpunk 2077: Not what it was supposed to be, but I did thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game until I had to shift my focus elsewhere. I'm hoping to return to the game to finish it at some point.
  10. Half-Life: Alyx: The only reason this doesn't rank higher is probably that I've spent so little time with it. I bought Cyberpunk 2077 soon after this, and got sidetracked from this one. Since then, it's been surprisingly difficult to find a good moment to return to this game.

Only the first five are probably really worthy of being on such a list of mine at the moment, but I guess we've been doing some top 10s in this thread so far, so why not.

EDIT: Added Alan Wake II and Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart, dropped Black Mesa and Assassin's Creed: Shadows. I kept Half-Life: Alyx, because so far it's been much more memorable than either of the two dropped games.

Lets see if I can fill a full top 10.

1. Resident Evil 4 Remake
2. New Pokémon Snap
3. Astro Bot
4. Hogwarts Legacy

... Well four is better than nothing.
I have played mostly last gen games on my PS5 and mostly indie or retro on my Switch, a lot of games that I do not remember but are fun for a few hours.

Still a lot of games I want to play but haven't gotten around to yet because money was tight for a long time, but in no particular order some standout titles include:

Resident Evil 4 remake
Metroid Dread
Silksong
Super Mario Wonder
Elden Ring
Horizon: Forbidden West
Doom Eternal
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
