Forums - Gaming - Games you were way late to the party on, and what was the experience like

Which games did you not get around playing until years and years after their release, and what did you think of them after all that time?

To start, I didn't play Donkey Kong Country 2/3 until 2008 as when i was a kid I wasn't really allowed to spend what little money I had on stuff like video games; absolutely loved them even a decade plus after their release.

Never played a Final Fantasy until FF7R and it was peak.

Zelda, missed it while I was a kid, it was never part of my Gameboy collection and none of my NES owning friends mentioned it.

First time I actually played it was a port of Link's Awakening in the TI-83 plus when I was in high school, and that was only the beginning of the game. Then I believe I tried to emulated it afterwards, but didn't get very far. It wasn't until the Switch remake that I actually finished the game! The feeling of accomplishment was awesome after such a long time, only thing I wasnt fond of was the inbetween fetch quest.

Thinking about this now, might as well get the Gameboy cartridge as a great souvenir during my Japan trip!

Edit: spelling...

You say tomato, I say tomato

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

Shenmuen1 and 2, both masterpieces. Metroid prime 1. Guardians of the galaxy, Mario galaxy, persona 5,  Baldurs gate 3. All phenomenal games.

Zelda. Wasnt really interested until Wind Waker. Its one of my favorite games of all time. Nothing really lived up to that game until Breath Of The Wild. Still like several other games in the series.

I haven't played wind waker, still waiting for a hd port to play on switch

I was very late to the PS2 in 2011 and God of War, Okami, FFX, SSX3 and others and I loved playing ports of PC games like Deus Ex and Mafia. It was a gaming revolution for me because up till 2011 I was exclusively a PC gamer.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Soooo many!! But i think the biggest one is mass effect trilogy, i always shitted on the game but this year i played it on ps4 and OMG!! what the F was i thinking this game is godtier amazing!!!!

Mostly PS1 games, and I really struggled to play some of them. I didn't play most PS1 games until the PS3 came out. Games like Final Fantasy 7, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider all just felt so dated when I tried them. I played Paper Mario 64 for the first time on the Wii U, and really liked it. Played Conker for the first time on Rare Replay and the controls were terrible. Decided to stop playing it and try the Xbox remake Reloaded and really liked it.  Usually if it's a 2D game I play years later it holds up, those early 3D games where you can't control the camera with the right control stick are usually the ones I struggle with.

Too many games including some of my all time favorites:

FF4, FF5, FF6, FF7, SotN, Super Metroid, OoT, ALttP, Majora's Mask, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Suikoden 2, Touhou 8, Ys Origin, ICO, Persona 3, Okami (played it for a few minutes on PS2, then finished in on PS5 two decades later), etc.

When I enter "retro mode", I often start with weaker games to adjust in preparation to well received games that I missed out on. Rather than going straight to them from modern games, sometimes I give myself time to adjust to the old standards. In some respects, older games remain superior when played today for the first time. But in other respects, I think it's just better to give yourself time so they can feel a little closer to how they would have felt if you played them back in the day. Obviously, it's impossible to replicate that, but this method works for me.

Retro gaming is cool and is one of the reasons I'm not all that worried about modern gaming crashing down. I could just go back to trying countless beloved games that I never got to experience.
