My first console was N64 or GameBoy if we include handhelds. Wouldn’t call either of them my favorites. Later in my childhood I got PS1 and PS2, they are probably the best if I am being honest. The Sega Saturn is also one of my favorites.

GameCube and Wii were my childhood consoles, with GameCube edging it out a little, I think. It's perhaps not rational to pick GameCube over Wii, as Wii had the Super Mario Galaxy games and most Wii consoles can play GameCube games. Still, GameCube is my childhood favorite.
Switch and PS4 have too many games in my mind to not surpass GameCube or Wii. They also have some modern conveniences too.

Assuming we are just talking about home consoles, my childhood console was GCN, but it has been surpassed by Wii & NS1. I could kind of consider Wii to be a childhood console too since I was almost 11 when I got it in Feb 2008, and that has been surpassed by NS1 for me as well.
Nope. Never got surpassed. If I were on an island and could take only one console, it would be my NES, all its carts, and a CRT. I love the SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1,2... whatever. But the NES is my happy place. The mere chip-tunes alone make me happy.
Favourite doesn't necessarily mean best.
With that said, the consoles I had as a child probably are my favourite. Lots of nostalgia and good memories. Even booting up the machine and listening to the boot-up sounds are nice.
I had the NES as a teenager, and it's the best console ever made. My other childhood consoles were the Atari 2600 and SNES, and neither ranks in my top 5.
I don't love the NES, because I was a child when it released. Instead, I consider myself a gamer four decades later, because I witnessed the NES when it was a current console. It's like all those boomers who love rock music, because they witnessed the Beatles firsthand. Well, I witnessed the NES firsthand. It is the greatest console of all time, and that's why I'm a gamer.
curl-6 bet me that PS5 + X|S sales would reach 56m before year end 2023 and he was right.
My Bet With curl-6

I mean, I spended money on new machines and I can play all my old games in those machines!!
| firebush03 said: Hard to say.. I’m not sure if GCN or Switch would be considered my childhood console. Throughout the Wii/Wii U generation, I always looked bitterly at Nintendo compared to their “Golden Years” that were GCN, the system I played up until 3rd grade. But the instant Switch hit market, I was immediately swayed by BotW and MK8DX into saying that yeah GCN has been surpassed. To this day, I still consider Switch as my favorite, and I really see no reality where a system can top the memories I got from Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, and so many other all time classics. My first 3D Mario, 2D and 3D Zelda, 2D Metroid, Mario RPGs, etc. It all started here. |
GCN was not golden years
Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

It was surpassed by Dreamcast in 1999. Nothing will ever surpass Dreamcast for me.

My favorite console is N64. I got it when I was 13, and it carried me through middle and high school.
My first two consoles were SNES and Game Gear (the NES in the house was more my brother's than mine) but I really cut my teeth on N64. I can't imagine any system topping it on an emotional level, since it introduced to me to so many new ideas, genres, and mechanics and because I made lifelong friends while playing it.
Is it the best system? No. But it's my favorite.
