Forums - Microsoft - Should Xbox adopt a less "red ocean" approach and instead do more to differentiate itself from PS?

Should Xbox do more to differentiate itself from PS?

Given that Xbox's consoles have, for the most part, attempted to take Playstation head-on by offering a similar experience, do you think they would be better served by doing things more differently than Sony and seeking to differentiate Xbox, rather than being a direct competitor?

Yes, if they can pull it off well. Personally I have little reason to believe they can though, so in practice my answer is no. Instead, they should capitalize on Sony's shortcomings and use them to gain some momentum and do everything right while Sony is overconfident. I don't think they can do that either, but at least it seems more likely.

Note that I didn't say they can't differentiate themselves from PlayStation. I only said I have little reason to believe they know how to do it well. They could certainly succeed at it, despite how it seems outward.

They tried that with Kinect. Smartglass and to some extent Hololens. Xbox is just not the company to try that stuff.

I mean they have tried, it's more the execution that missed the mark IMO.

On the other hand, competing head on doesn't seem to be working out for them either.

Imho, Xbox has a chance to differentiate itself, but it's a very dangerous bet...

THEY NEED TO GO FULL EXCLUSIVE!! TES VI, Fallout V, Call of Duty, all future titles... everything exclusively on Xbox!!!

No Playstation port, no PC port... You want to play these games? Buy a Xbox.

That's the only way, an all or nothing power move.

They have strong ips, Playstation is living a weaker moment. They just need the courage ( reckless madness ) to bet everything on Xbox.

That said... that is not happening... Because AI is draining all funds and they are already losing trucks of money with Data centers.

What worked in the past?

Being the Shooter/dudebro box (halo/gears/forza), with focus on popular American sports games.
With them getting blizzard/king ect, they just need the western RPGs to stay high quality, along with CoD.

They need to fire all consultants like sweetbaby inc, and anyone trying to push DEI.
No this is not a box for girls (and that is okay).
They need to stop pushing rainbow flags and skins, for suits, for halo. Stuff like that really breaks immersion.
They need to stop the girl boss route in games , and hitting female character designs with ugly hammers (same is true for sony).

The bread and butter is guys being dudes online, the more facilitated that is, and the clearer the messaging around that, the more they would stand out from the crowd. Relax voice chat rules ect.... get rid of all that safe space crap, and try to repeat the xb360.

Guys taunting each other online in a competitive shooter, seems to be alot of what made xbox popular.
That is the honest truth.

Also I think guys make up a majority of game sales in the franchises they have (halo,gears,forza,CoD,D4,WoW,.. ect).
Trying to appeal to everyone, will just end up making something no one actually enjoys.

I would want to see what happens too.
I think they would have to eat huge losses in profits for along time.
However maybe down the line, in the long run, that could work out for the better. This would atleast help the install base of xbox users.

I don't really see a way they can differentiate themselves at this point. Convergent design suggests that all products will eventually be the same. Unless they figure put some insane new way to deliver games, their stuck with the same type of box as PS.

Why are you both assuming the only way to differentiate themselves is with hardware?

The easiest way would be to do it with catalog and 1st party games, and potentially rules/ecosystems/marketing.
They already are pretty different in that regard than PlayStation. So you just crank it up a notch.

Go super focused on the male audience, its the bread and butter.... and trying to get more inclusion, women to play CoD/forza/Halo hasn't really done much.
Next gen, focus marketing and game aspect more on the guys.

Look at all the sh*t sony is getting for Wolverine being kinda "meh", and design choices done by consultants like sweet baby inc.
Ei. the ugly women in games aspect and such.

Imagine if Wolverine looked like the comic books. (ei. why cant games that are meant to appeal to men, have sexy looking character designs in them anymore?)

Its not just 1 or 2 characters... its all of them.
Even wolverine looks "soft" and off.

like look at this:

He looks off...

Also they hint at a non-platonic love between logan and sabertooth in the game.
Like Wtf? that is not accurate to the lore from the comics.<

^ sh*t like this is what xbox needs to avoid at all costs.

Let Playstation mess up and have it cost them.
Meanwhile you do the opposite.
Drop all the ugly female designs, drop all this inserted gay fan fiction rewrites, the LBGQT+ skins for halo and sh*t like that.
Let guys have their "space" and be the place where that can be.

Yeah I personally would be much more inclined to get an Xbox Series/Helix if they leant back into being the go-to guy's console like the 360 days and quit pandering to the political correctness brigade, but I won't hold my breath. (Nor support them while they continue with that crap)

Personally I don't want to put unnecessary restrictions on myself or on artists for that matter. I cannot be bothered to boycott media that's labelled woke, feminist, misogynist, racist, DEI, transphobic and all other kinds of nasty words, unless it is very blatantly a political work. Life is too short to get worked up over some character designs in a video game or sit and look for small little details to get angry about, that's just not something I want to spend my energy on. Art should be as free as possible from limitations imposed by external actors.

Maybe I am not in touch with public discourse anymore, since I pulled the plug on social media, but LGBT skins in Halo sounds like an issue for a very small minority of people, who are just looking for stuff to be angry about. I didn't even know about those Halo skins to be honest, I doubt most people know or care for them. That some optional skins in Halo would mean people don't buy an Xbox seems like a stretch to me.

To me the big Xbox franchises still very much focus on the dude-bro audience. Which is fine, if they actually delivered the goods. For the last 15 years or so, Xbox has been mostly associated with three franchises, Forza, Gears and Halo. That is just not enough, they should at least double that amount. Releasing those core franchises on competing hardware is the dumbest decision ever, because it is ruining their brand. It also doesn't help that their most important IP, Halo, hasn't had a really strong title since 360 days. Halo and Gears should ideally be game-of-the-year contenders every time they release, Gears 5 was kinda part of the conversation in 2019, but Halo hasn't been since Halo Reach.
