No, retailers do not get a 40% cut. Jason Schreir had a good source on this a few weeks ago. Retailers get $15 of a $70 sale.

Btw I do love the stupid false dilemma that pro-digital people give. It's either "retailers are cutting stock because they only make $15" or "Sony is cutting discs because they only make 50% as much revenue as digital". Whether retailers not getting enough money or Sony not getting enough money is the problem the conclusion is always "so it's a good thing that physical is going away".

IIRC he said retailers take around 30% vs the 15% that goes to platform holders. He only corroborated what others before him said. Who mentioned anything about a 40% cut?

Platform holders and publishers want to eliminate retailer cuts, physical printing/manufacturing costs, and trading/sharing from the equation. COD blatantly chose code in a box over GKC, probably because they don't like the trading/sharing aspect of GKC.

It's crazy that GKC which was frowned upon a coupe of months ago will soon be seen as the best option!

Here's the article Jason was quoting. https://www.serkantoto.com/2020/12/30/price-video-console-game-digital-physical/

Retailers do typically get a 30% cut and Platform holders do get 15%. So you were right. At least with 3rd party games. Otherwise 1st party games keep a much bigger share of the money since they do double duty as developer and platform holder.

Yeah this is the same link that I shared with you over a year before Jason made his video.

The 5% for manufacturing the physical media is outdated though, because Switch 2's expensive cartridges weren't accounted for. There's a reason why most 3rd party publishers are going for GKC.

It definitely fits into 2 discs like Rebirth did.

They can't even throw a second disc on very expensive collectors editions.

It is, once again, about pushing people to digital so they have bigger shares forever, nothing more, SE was so happy with the news Sony shared about killing physical media they couldn't even wait for it to happen and had to rush to do it before themselves.

Absolutely pathetic.

Most publishers are pleased about Sony's decision (some will pretend that they aren't). It sucks for the consumer but it's understandable from a business perspective, retailers get a large cut on every physical sale (twice the cut that the platform holder gets). A digital dominated future was inevitable, Sony ditching physical is just accelerating that.

True physical options will disappear soon. GKC is preferable to what Sony is doing and makes perfect sense for Nintendo, but it isn't true physical either, and Nintendo didn't prevent Call of Duty from being a code in a box...

It's a shame SquareEnix chose against including the full game here, but Sony is the main villain and enablers. And again we don't know what all these disruptions in the disc supply chain mean to disc prices. Sony repurposing their largest disc plant may have already caused an increase in BD prices in some sectors, and they're probably not the only manufacturers that are repurposing, closing, or downsizing their factories.

Nevertheless SE should have included the full game at least with the collectors edition, even if it required 3 discs. If pricing is a problem, then make it $20 more expensive. That way they would make as much money from physical as digital per sale.

Sony is the vilain for themselves, and after 2028.

Microsoft has been doing this missing data from disc thing for years now, way before what Sony has announced 2 months ago disrupting anything worldwide.

Square Enix is to blame here, and its fans are enablers, even as they were, most definitely, haters when it was coming from Sony 2 months ago, as the OP has been updating the thread, things are getting sold out quickly.

I saw the thread on ResetEra getting down very quickly too, with a lot of posts saying they will buy it regardless. The thread when Sony announced it was one of the biggest things I've ever seen, together with the reaction on their blog and social media, and still all over anything they do, like the State of Play. But let's just shrug when its Square Enix because come on, it's Final Fantasy 7 guys!

I saw Maximiliam Dood, a very nice guy that has gone digital on PC for years now, get so sad and blame Sony for doing what it is doing, but now that's Square Enix doing it with the game he loves, from which he personally received the director for an interview in his house after getting a call live the moment the game was announced, react in a completely difference manner, just being unhappy and then going "oh well", and ordering the most expensive overseas version of it and moving to full hype mode on his channel immediatly.

His video about Sony even as a doom evocating thumbnail, his latest video about FF7 is 100% hype (which is obviously fine to be hyper about). He has the contact of the guy, he interviewed him once, I would immediatly try to get him for an interview, even if he is in Japan we have the internet, to explain himself now too, but nah, things can only happen when its to promote stuff, nobody confronts shit anymore, can't risk the corpo being unhappy now, can we?

Square Enix is to blame and Square Enix alone.

Like Sony, Square Enix is greedy. And they are SO greedy they couldn't even wait to blame Sony for it and save face because they knew their enabler fans.

Even though the full data isn't on the disc, I preordered the deluxe edition on PS5 anyways. I have Remake and Rebirth in their own steel book cases so I will at least complete the set of those for the physical collection.

It's not the same thing. What Sony is doing is a million times worse, because it forces ALL publishers to ditch physical on Playstation... FF7 Revelation is just one game...

SE is getting some backlash too, but obviously it isn't as bad as Sony's and it shouldn't be.

Sony as the co-creator of Bluray choosing to kill discs will have a significant impact on physical media even outside gaming. The effect of FF7 Revelation going digital or "fake physical" compared to that is like a drop in an ocean.

It's not that I think Sony is "more evil" than the next company. But they're just in a position where their decisions can have a great impact on shaping the industry. They were rightly praised endlessly for keeping physical and trading alive in the events leading to PS4's launch. Now they're rightly being demonized for choosing to end physical abruptly.

Square's little choice here has little bearing on industry trends. It's still messed up and you have the right to complain about it and many SE fans are doing just that, but it's not even remotely comparable to Sony killing discs. And funny you call SquareEnix fans enablers! Bro we're some of the most divided and hard to please motherfuckers in gaming. FF7 Rebirth, one of the best modern RPGs, constantly gets shat on by many of the classics' fans, and it sold like shit too relative to its brand and quality. The jury is out on how Revelation's approach will affect sales but many fans ARE actively complaining about it.

I'm not comparing the level of which are pushing it, because Sony is the only one that holds the system, but SE is doing it on their own biggest thing just as well. SE couldn't possibly push it further like Sony can, simply because they lack the option of being able to do so.

When you can't throw a second disc on a version charging $100 or much, much above that, it is about the message and the purpose, not the cost of that one operation, it is irrelevant, they can throw a massive statue and many other things that costs loads more than a single blu-ray disc that costs pennies for them, but they make sure which one to not include. That's about it. That's on them, and on them alone.

And I know the fanbase is divided, I'm part of it, the part that likes FF12 the most so you can understand in which % of hearing shit inside the fanbase I'm included.

That doesn't change the fact they are enablers, I went to posts made by Square and the Director of the game on social media, aside from forums like here and ResetEra as I said, and the sentiment is: get the most expensive version I can and don't talk about the disc situation. That's the overall sentiment I keep seeing online.

The thread about the disc situation on ResetEra, the by far biggest gaming forum in the world, hasn't even being replied to today, less than 48 hours after the fact, meanwhile the thread about Sony from 2 months ago has.

It is clear, when its about something people want, they will avoid facing it, exactly the same as the GTA crowd did. But the worse part is, the fanbase for JRPGs, and Final Fantasy in special, is one of, if the not THE one, that overlap the most with the group of people against the death of physical media, which is a very different thing for the GTA crowd.

I guarantee you a lot of the same people that were campaigning against Sony for doijg it, be it just a few posts or engaging with it constantly, are the ones buying the most.expensive versions of this game and being mute about it. That's why if you go look for it yourself right now you'll struggle to find any kind of meaningful engagement towards it.

We agree that most big publishers are extremely happy about Sony pushing it and taking the heat for themselves.

And that we can't compare the levels of said actions, but we can compare the isntant deflation of the situation on SE side, which as I said, I'm sure involves many of the same group of people that took the mantle and still do regarding Sony.

Theoreticals don't matter. Sony's actions inherently have a big impact on the industry, SE's don't, simple as that. A bad decision generates negative reactions, a thousand times worse and more impactful decision generates a gazillion times more negative reactions. That's completely natural. I don't think Resetera users are being hypocritical on this.

Sony acquiring Insomniac wasn't as bad as Microsoft acquiring ABK. SE making one game digital isn't comparable to Sony forcing literally everything including 3rd party games to go digital. If you understand that the two aren't comparable, then you should also understand why one is getting a lot more energy than the other. Not to mention that SE's move came after Sony's which set a terrible standard. When MS announced more massive layoffs after Sony's industry changing announcement... seemingly nobody cared either. The gravity set by Sony was just too grand for anything else to matter for a while. It literally marked the start of a new era.... and everyone who knows what's going on was expecting many publishers to be encouraged and empowered by it.

When Sony announced their pro-consumer move before PS4's launch... it caught publishers like EA offguard, and helped keeping ownership alive for 10+ more years. They could have kept ownership alive for another 10 years, and let digital adoption take its natural course rather than enforcing it.

I guess we're all "enablers" one way or another. I too enabled an earlier digital future by playing exclusively digitally all gen on PC and PS5 (coz I only had access to my brother's PS5DE, and as a now casual-ish gamer found no need to get my own expensive PS5). You will be an enabler when your next favorite Sony game is released as a digital only title. And from certain people's perspective, all PS gamers were enablers the moment PS5DE was announced, because they viewed that as an indicator of a very near digital-only future (and they were right). Sony and Valve both used me as a tool to end physical and ownership.

Second most hyped game for 2027 for me. Gundam being no 1. I am excited to play as Vincent. Not watched the new trailer. Holding out for now. I will be there day 1 for PS5. Now Square, please REMAKE not Remaster Dirge so the game can be a good TPS. Not the clunkfest it is.

Sony and Valve both used me as a tool to end physical and ownership.

Square Enix move came before Sony actually, Sony has only announced it, it doesn't take effect until 2028, yet SE is already fucking up their fanbase, which is gladly taking it and rewarding them with a rain on money, exactly like we saw with GTA VI.

You can't shift the blame away from SE, it's all on them, and that's exactly what you were doing saying Sony is the main villain in a situation about a SE game. That's 100% on SE. They are their own villain. Period.

There is nothing theorical about it, that's happening with their biggest game ever, they are doing it with what they have the power to do so. Specially in the last part of a 3 way remake project that took a decade.

You also can't compare the situation as there is really no resistance whatsoever into the SE fanbase side, or even the media.

I went on social media, sites, forums, and pretty much nothing at all. Nearly no comment, nearly no news, absolutely no actual resistance whatsover, my posts on social media were hardly engaged and the current conversation was always vastly dominated by hype, almost nobody cared about it whatsover.

And again, that is very likely the most overlaping fanbase which has engaged with the movements against Sony, which is currently going on in everything they do. I know for a fact there are people on this very thread are acting completely different than what they did in the thread about Sony, for example.

About me also becoming an enabler, let's see how it goes. I haven't touched the digital only God of War Sons of Sparta in hopes it would get a physical release, it didn't and won't, I still haven't. That's my favorite franchise in gaming. And I'm not planning to buy any digital only game they release, but we'll have to wait for that because for now I can't back up that claim since the decision is not in effect, so its easy to say it.

I'm not buying Revelations unless they release an actual physical version btw, while I physically own pretty much every single FFs in some shape or form, except FF8 I guess.

And gaming here is a vastly costlier investment than most people reading my post have any reference about, being a physical collectors is a much harder decision from someone living here than many other countries out there, yet I'm one and have not moved to digital yet...

It's funny you believe I'll become an enabler too, even as you have no indication about it, and that's exactly because they do it, because people accept everything and even point at others expecting them to do the same. But again, you can't be disproven yet, as it didn't actually start to happen.

Sony announced it first and the backlash is about the news/promise, not the execution. The execution is virtually inevitable unless the outrage miraculously changes it and we can throw a party in celebration. Whatever SE is doing here, it's inconsequential and incomparable to Sony who set a bleak atmosphere and sealed the fate of discs.

You pretty much said that Sony's announcement was what energized SE and made them confident in that move. So you admitted the correlation yourself. Sony's choices can have a ripple effect because they're a huge player in the industry, that's just common sense. No, this doesn't make it acceptable for SE to do whatever they're doing, but Sony by your own logic are the enablers (enabler isn't a big word). Less terrible news won't catch as much attention because everyone is focused on the worse criminal, Sony is indeed the main villain. They're not the main villain in SE's choice to go digital for one game, they are the main villain of the larger "death of discs" topic that took over the internet by storm and is correlated to GTA6 and FF7R going digital-only.

To be more clear: the main culprit of FF7 going digital-only is obviously SquareEnix themselves... but Sony fueled and enabled that (an accomplice if you will). Sony's decision to end discs is a thousand times worse and that's not an exaggeration. SE isn't in the process of forcing every single 3rd party game to go digital-only on Playstation. Resetera and the internet's general reactions to Sony's vs SE's bad decisions are logical...

I'm sorry for assuming a big Sony 1st party fan like yourself wouldn't stop buying Sony games just because they're digital-only. Maybe I assumed wrong but I genuinely didn't expect you to deny that! Are you considering boycotting Sony and Playstation?
