His video about Sony even as a doom evocating thumbnail, his latest video about FF7 is 100% hype (which is obviously fine to be hyper about). He has the contact of the guy, he interviewed him once, I would immediatly try to get him for an interview, even if he is in Japan we have the internet, to explain himself now too, but nah, things can only happen when its to promote stuff, nobody confronts shit anymore, can't risk the corpo being unhappy now, can we? Square Enix is to blame and Square Enix alone. Like Sony, Square Enix is greedy. And they are SO greedy they couldn't even wait to blame Sony for it and save face because they knew their enabler fans. |
It's not the same thing. What Sony is doing is a million times worse, because it forces ALL publishers to ditch physical on Playstation... FF7 Revelation is just one game...
SE is getting some backlash too, but obviously it isn't as bad as Sony's and it shouldn't be.
Sony as the co-creator of Bluray choosing to kill discs will have a significant impact on physical media even outside gaming. The effect of FF7 Revelation going digital or "fake physical" compared to that is like a drop in an ocean.
It's not that I think Sony is "more evil" than the next company. But they're just in a position where their decisions can have a great impact on shaping the industry. They were rightly praised endlessly for keeping physical and trading alive in the events leading to PS4's launch. Now they're rightly being demonized for choosing to end physical abruptly.
Square's little choice here has little bearing on industry trends. It's still messed up and you have the right to complain about it and many SE fans are doing just that, but it's not even remotely comparable to Sony killing discs. And funny you call SquareEnix fans enablers! Bro we're some of the most divided and hard to please motherfuckers in gaming. FF7 Rebirth, one of the best modern RPGs, constantly gets shat on by many of the classics' fans, and it sold like shit too relative to its brand and quality. The jury is out on how Revelation's approach will affect sales but many fans ARE actively complaining about it. |
I'm not comparing the level of which are pushing it, because Sony is the only one that holds the system, but SE is doing it on their own biggest thing just as well. SE couldn't possibly push it further like Sony can, simply because they lack the option of being able to do so.
When you can't throw a second disc on a version charging $100 or much, much above that, it is about the message and the purpose, not the cost of that one operation, it is irrelevant, they can throw a massive statue and many other things that costs loads more than a single blu-ray disc that costs pennies for them, but they make sure which one to not include. That's about it. That's on them, and on them alone.
And I know the fanbase is divided, I'm part of it, the part that likes FF12 the most so you can understand in which % of hearing shit inside the fanbase I'm included.
That doesn't change the fact they are enablers, I went to posts made by Square and the Director of the game on social media, aside from forums like here and ResetEra as I said, and the sentiment is: get the most expensive version I can and don't talk about the disc situation. That's the overall sentiment I keep seeing online.
The thread about the disc situation on ResetEra, the by far biggest gaming forum in the world, hasn't even being replied to today, less than 48 hours after the fact, meanwhile the thread about Sony from 2 months ago has.
It is clear, when its about something people want, they will avoid facing it, exactly the same as the GTA crowd did. But the worse part is, the fanbase for JRPGs, and Final Fantasy in special, is one of, if the not THE one, that overlap the most with the group of people against the death of physical media, which is a very different thing for the GTA crowd.
I guarantee you a lot of the same people that were campaigning against Sony for doijg it, be it just a few posts or engaging with it constantly, are the ones buying the most.expensive versions of this game and being mute about it. That's why if you go look for it yourself right now you'll struggle to find any kind of meaningful engagement towards it.
We agree that most big publishers are extremely happy about Sony pushing it and taking the heat for themselves.
And that we can't compare the levels of said actions, but we can compare the isntant deflation of the situation on SE side, which as I said, I'm sure involves many of the same group of people that took the mantle and still do regarding Sony.
