Theoreticals don't matter. Sony's actions inherently have a big impact on the industry, SE's don't, simple as that. A bad decision generates negative reactions, a thousand times worse and more impactful decision generates a gazillion times more negative reactions. That's completely natural. I don't think Resetera users are being hypocritical on this. Sony acquiring Insomniac wasn't as bad as Microsoft acquiring ABK. SE making one game digital isn't comparable to Sony forcing literally everything including 3rd party games to go digital. If you understand that the two aren't comparable, then you should also understand why one is getting a lot more energy than the other. Not to mention that SE's move came after Sony's which set a terrible standard. When MS announced more massive layoffs after Sony's industry changing announcement... seemingly nobody cared either. The gravity set by Sony was just too grand for anything else to matter for a while. It literally marked the start of a new era.... and everyone who knows what's going on was expecting many publishers to be encouraged and empowered by it. When Sony announced their pro-consumer move before PS4's launch... it caught publishers like EA offguard, and helped keeping ownership alive for 10+ more years. They could have kept ownership alive for another 10 years, and let digital adoption take its natural course rather than enforcing it. I guess we're all "enablers" one way or another. I too enabled an earlier digital future by playing exclusively digitally all gen on PC and PS5 (coz I only had access to my brother's PS5DE, and as a now casual-ish gamer found no need to get my own expensive PS5). You will be an enabler when your next favorite Sony game is released as a digital only title. And from certain people's perspective, all PS gamers were enablers the moment PS5DE was announced, because they viewed that as an indicator of a very near digital-only future (and they were right). Sony and Valve both used me as a tool to end physical and ownership. |
Square Enix move came before Sony actually, Sony has only announced it, it doesn't take effect until 2028, yet SE is already fucking up their fanbase, which is gladly taking it and rewarding them with a rain on money, exactly like we saw with GTA VI.
You can't shift the blame away from SE, it's all on them, and that's exactly what you were doing saying Sony is the main villain in a situation about a SE game. That's 100% on SE. They are their own villain. Period.
There is nothing theorical about it, that's happening with their biggest game ever, they are doing it with what they have the power to do so. Specially in the last part of a 3 way remake project that took a decade.
You also can't compare the situation as there is really no resistance whatsoever into the SE fanbase side, or even the media.
I went on social media, sites, forums, and pretty much nothing at all. Nearly no comment, nearly no news, absolutely no actual resistance whatsover, my posts on social media were hardly engaged and the current conversation was always vastly dominated by hype, almost nobody cared about it whatsover.
And again, that is very likely the most overlaping fanbase which has engaged with the movements against Sony, which is currently going on in everything they do. I know for a fact there are people on this very thread are acting completely different than what they did in the thread about Sony, for example.
About me also becoming an enabler, let's see how it goes. I haven't touched the digital only God of War Sons of Sparta in hopes it would get a physical release, it didn't and won't, I still haven't. That's my favorite franchise in gaming. And I'm not planning to buy any digital only game they release, but we'll have to wait for that because for now I can't back up that claim since the decision is not in effect, so its easy to say it.
I'm not buying Revelations unless they release an actual physical version btw, while I physically own pretty much every single FFs in some shape or form, except FF8 I guess.
And gaming here is a vastly costlier investment than most people reading my post have any reference about, being a physical collectors is a much harder decision from someone living here than many other countries out there, yet I'm one and have not moved to digital yet...
It's funny you believe I'll become an enabler too, even as you have no indication about it, and that's exactly because they do it, because people accept everything and even point at others expecting them to do the same. But again, you can't be disproven yet, as it didn't actually start to happen.
