Sony announced it first and the backlash is about the news/promise, not the execution. The execution is virtually inevitable unless the outrage miraculously changes it and we can throw a party in celebration. Whatever SE is doing here, it's inconsequential and incomparable to Sony who set a bleak atmosphere and sealed the fate of discs. You pretty much said that Sony's announcement was what energized SE and made them confident in that move. So you admitted the correlation yourself. Sony's choices can have a ripple effect because they're a huge player in the industry, that's just common sense. No, this doesn't make it acceptable for SE to do whatever they're doing, but Sony by your own logic are the enablers (enabler isn't a big word). Less terrible news won't catch as much attention because everyone is focused on the worse criminal, Sony is indeed the main villain. They're not the main villain in SE's choice to go digital for one game, they are the main villain of the larger "death of discs" topic that took over the internet by storm and is correlated to GTA6 and FF7R going digital-only. To be more clear: the main culprit of FF7 going digital-only is obviously SquareEnix themselves... but Sony fueled and enabled that (an accomplice if you will). Sony's decision to end discs is a thousand times worse and that's not an exaggeration. SE isn't in the process of forcing every single 3rd party game to go digital-only on Playstation. Resetera and the internet's general reactions to Sony's vs SE's bad decisions are logical... I'm sorry for assuming a big Sony 1st party fan like yourself wouldn't stop buying Sony games just because they're digital-only. Maybe I assumed wrong but I genuinely didn't expect you to deny that! Are you considering boycotting Sony and Playstation? |
The point was lost a long time ago, of course Sony is responsible for what they do, buy Square Enix is the only responsible for what they do themselves too, even if they feel safer to do it after Sony made the announcement, it's 100% on their own. Also, GTA6 was a digital only game before Sony made that announced, btw. Regardless, that's not the point.
The point is people are not fighting back Square Enix even moderatedly, they are very much rewarding them for doing it and pretty much entirely ignoring the issue, and they were very likely a huge part of the people mad at Sony, as they should, before that.
About me personally, I'm considering dropping modern gaming altogether aside from Nintendo 1st party until/if they start doing the GKC themselves too, and only buy digital games from indie studios here and there, because it is very reasonable for them to not have the money to invest in big physical prints, which is what I have been doing my entire life, nearly 100% of the digital games I have are cheap indies or very cheap classic games there are no prints anymore for decades (from which I may also own the physical version of it).
I have been going on Sony dev studio profiles and asking them about the situation and telling them, even as I'm a big fan of their work, if their parent company pulls the shit it is announced to do I may very well not buy a game from them anymore, even as I love their games. I'm not up to harassing any of them, but as a fan of their work I'm letting them in on how I feel, and I do believe they are big enough to position themselves against or even in line with it. It's not like Sony would fire Cory Barlog and Neil Druckmann if they said they would like to still be able to ship physical games, Cory said he would like their games on PC even before God of War was ever announced for it, for example.
The fact that decision is just a mandate going down the chain and nobody can speak their mind about it is another reason it is only anti consumer.
Again, about me dropping new releases, I can't prove it until it happens, but I'm not planning at all to carve in and just move full digital when it does happen, but until it in fact does happen it's just how I feel right now.
I've already made peace with the possibility of not getting the God of War trilogy remake even as it was something I've been asking about for several years, and was very hyped about when it was finally announced, tho.
