Yeah the Western Mario Bros 2 (AKA Doki Doki Panic) is terrific and definitely deserves more credit than it gets.
The JP one, Lost Levels, ain't so hot.

Are we talk about USA or JP? If USA then yeah 100% this game is ridiculously underappreciated. I’d easily take it over 1 and 3. If JP? Well I’ve never played that one so… can’t comment on it. |
The international version yes. The JP version I never got on the NES back in the day.

Not sure if Nintendo owns it, it's more second party. But yeah, incredible game. |
They own it the only issue is NA because Reggie and co never brought the game over, operation rainfall lead to XSeed publishing it in NA instead meaning in NA the latter holds the publishing rights to the game but the IP ownership is held by Nintendo.

Nintendo does? OK. I was not sure, because sometimes it is strange with second party. For instance Another Code wasn't owned by Nintendo (and Reggie also denied Another Code R, which is also an amazing game). Nintendo only later bought the rights when cing was bankrupt.

PT was an early example of the approach taken with Astral Chain where they own the IP but the game is co-developed allowing the development partner partial rights to the particular game developed. I feel if PT was developed today it would have had a much higher chance of a sequel.

I don't know if an sequel could add anything, but it is sad that this game will probably never exist outside the Wii and Ganbarion didn't get another chance.

It doesn't need to be a sequel each game can be stand alone similar to how Zelda was before the whole timeline.
