Forums - Gaming - ID Software just lost 50% of its staff

Looks like reports were exaggerated. I hate the amount of layoffs we've had, but this may have been a case where the studio got bigger than they needed to be. Which happened to a lot of studios during the COVID gaming boom. Hopefully this means that id will mitigate the risk of spending too much on new games and can be successful with the audience they bring in without having to set the gaming world on fire.

Same size as when they made Doom (2016). So they will survive, but the next game might take longer and be a bit of a smaller scale. Unless they outsource.

I'm personally expecting a lot more co-development amongst Bethesda's studios. MachineGames and Zenimax Online Studios even assisted with Doom (2016). Especially now that ZOS has essentially been taken off ESO. At least with major expansions.

If Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake are the 5 IPs Bethesda will be focused on going forward, co-development between the studios makes the most sense.

Yeah I agree co-development across ZeniMax and probably all of Xbox is going to happen more.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Zenimax remains in its own bubble. Almost all of Xbox works within Unreal Engine now with just a couple of outliers. Zenimax's studios work exclusively in Creation Engine and idTech. Even Indiana Jones was built on a modded version of idTech.

My thoughts exactly. It's been ten years, the next generation is ongoing, and studios might already have to prepare for the generation coming after the current one. The same team size simply doesn't cut it, and the downsizing will require a lot to compensate for. It's not necessarily impossible, but I wouldn't get my hopes up regarding the scope and/or release schedule of id's next game. Also, it's probably going to be more Doom.

Good to hear it wasn't as bad as it sounded.

While it sucks that a lot of people did lose their jobs due to Microsoft's shitty management, the remaining team still being as big as when they made Doom 2016 is a huge relief. That game was awesome.

Id dying altogether would've been a huge loss to the medium so thank fuck they're still kicking.

Yeah, it's still a lost when id Software are not going to develop their own engine that can be used for the FPS games. To support the studio, I'm gonna buy Doom TDA with DLC, when I have time to play at path traced settings.
