Yeah the twitter backlash is nice but people also have to put their mouth where there money is.

I have a feeling very few of the vocal groups are actually unsubscribing from PSN, avoiding the next few 1st party titles or avoiding purchases all together.

Avoiding physical games is not a thing we should be doing, and I certainly won't ignore any physical game until they keep being made. That's the point of even wanting physical games, so we can have them.

I've cancelled my PS+ sub renew even before this announcement, prices are already too high. I was waiting for a double deal on both PS+ and coupouns for credit for store, but yeah, it's going to run out unless they reverse this.

Companies are not charity and customers mean money for them, that's perfectly fine, I'm not expecting an unreasonable fairytale dreamland Sony, but we are still both parts benefiting mutually from the transaction, supposedly.

Sony needs to benefit from it, which they surely have been doing for the entire generation yearly on a streak of record breaking results, so it's not like Sony needs to do what they are doing, they want to do it, which is very different.

As customers have been disrespected twice already both by the announcement and by Sony ignoring to address the result of it, for the service they provide they'll also need to show actual compromise to customers from now on too.

I think sony will see people rushing to buy physicals of new games as a natural reaction, it doesn't in any way hurt them of make them want to reconsider, if anything it just reinforces how strongly uses are tied to their gaming needs. I understand your position though

I think one of the reason for lets indeed call them "the suits" they did not expect the backlash to be this big is because in their eyes their DATA says 85%+- buya digital, when now we all know that number included:
DLC
AD ONS
FREE GAME DOWNLOADS
DIGITAL ONLY GAMES
I would not be surprised if the actuall physical to digital ratio is 30+% thats a LOT of physical games.

Not entirely true

Well then that leaves Sony counting...

Digital-Only Indies
Free Live-Service Titles
PS+ Monthly Free Games
Games with an extremely limited physical release.

Either way they are massively skewing the numbers.

I just wanted to chime in and leave a quick comment regarding this belief that Sony has a monopoly and can't fail that is making the rounds right now: Sony is not the "dedicated market leader" of the console space. Sony isn't even the market leader right now. Sony does not exist in a bubble.

Sony can not just sell only 50 million consoles next gen because "oh well, they have a monopoly". That's pure BS. Last time Sony f*cked up they had to lose four billion dollars and spend the entirety of the PS3 generation to recover. Last time Sony f*cked up, Microsoft overtook them in sales for like 5 straight years in the home console space. Microsoft, right now, is looking into producing more Xbox exclusives, and contrary to what some people think they have the money to spend on that so they can come back stronger next gen. If Microsoft is willing to take a bigger loss on their hardware, releases a decent amount of exclusives and offers gamers physical media then Microsoft will overtake Sony in sales next gen. Sony is not the "chosen one" of the gaming space who can never fail.

If the gaming market has shown us one thing in the past it's that companies often get arrogant if they stay on top for too long. Happened to Nintendo twice, happened to Sony once already (even to Microsoft after the success of the 360). And whenever companies piss off their customers, their sales crash and burn in the next generation.

I really hope Microsoft listens to this conversation and goes hard on physical media next gen (as Nintendo already does) because ultimately, if consumers have the choice they are going to vote with their wallets. And that's historically been the best corrective for a company that thinks it can milk its customer base and does not need to listen to consumers, no matter which company it was.

We do have power. We can turn things around.

And just for the record: Yes, I'm a Nintendo fan at heart. But I don't think for a second that Nintendo couldn't be the next to screw up. I've been here during their past mistakes, lol. I know no company is immune to this sort of arrogance.

They didn't have to lie to everyone,

The consumer did not choose digital over physical. They chose to tolerate the only choice they had which was digital. Just say the consumer has been conditioned to digital media and now you have the opportunity to cut costs.

Jason breaks down the costs to make a digital game vs a physical game. Basically, Sony only takes a 15% cut from physical 3rd party disks but gets a full 30% cut from digital sales. Jokes on them, though, because the most hardcore Sony fans are physical-only. Once they go all digital, they will lose those customers who spend 10 times as much as your average Joe.

While I am pissed and want my physical media, I also think we should not pretend that there aren't A LOT of gamers that actively chose to go mostly or completely digital, also in instances where they have the choice between physical and digital. Some out of the misunderstanding that they think they own digital purchases the same way they own physical media, but plenty well aware of the implications. I know people who are hardcore console gamers in regards to time played and money spent but could not care less for physical media- they are happy with the convenience aspects of digital "purchases" and think the occasional game being pulled from their library is worth it. They think we are just old men yelling at the clouds.

The increasingly digital age has made the common consumer prefer convenience above all else. This extends well beyond video games. Practically everyone I know does all their shopping online, regardless of the industry.
