I just wanted to chime in and leave a quick comment regarding this belief that Sony has a monopoly and can't fail that is making the rounds right now: Sony is not the "dedicated market leader" of the console space. Sony isn't even the market leader right now. Sony does not exist in a bubble.
Sony can not just sell only 50 million consoles next gen because "oh well, they have a monopoly". That's pure BS. Last time Sony f*cked up they had to lose four billion dollars and spend the entirety of the PS3 generation to recover. Last time Sony f*cked up, Microsoft overtook them in sales for like 5 straight years in the home console space. Microsoft, right now, is looking into producing more Xbox exclusives, and contrary to what some people think they have the money to spend on that so they can come back stronger next gen. If Microsoft is willing to take a bigger loss on their hardware, releases a decent amount of exclusives and offers gamers physical media then Microsoft will overtake Sony in sales next gen. Sony is not the "chosen one" of the gaming space who can never fail.
If the gaming market has shown us one thing in the past it's that companies often get arrogant if they stay on top for too long. Happened to Nintendo twice, happened to Sony once already (even to Microsoft after the success of the 360). And whenever companies piss off their customers, their sales crash and burn in the next generation.
I really hope Microsoft listens to this conversation and goes hard on physical media next gen (as Nintendo already does) because ultimately, if consumers have the choice they are going to vote with their wallets. And that's historically been the best corrective for a company that thinks it can milk its customer base and does not need to listen to consumers, no matter which company it was.
We do have power. We can turn things around.
And just for the record: Yes, I'm a Nintendo fan at heart. But I don't think for a second that Nintendo couldn't be the next to screw up. I've been here during their past mistakes, lol. I know no company is immune to this sort of arrogance.
