DC Studios' new superhero film grossed a meagre $38 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, against a reported production and marketing budget of over $300 million:

I had no interest in seeing this movie before and this information does nothing to change that.

Is the super hero genre saturated finally?

The type of movie I'll watch if I'm channel surfing and see it.

The trailers came off as a worse Guardians of the Galaxy, and Supergirl herself came off as unlikeable, which hasn't exactly worked out well. Superman disappointed me, so I wasn't that excited for Supergirl, and the trailers cemented it for me.

Don't worry, Wall Street Journal's got the ace up its sleeve defense.....MISOGYNY! I wish I was joking lol

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

People are tired of superhero movies, yeah Spider-Man and Avengers and the bigger IP will still draw but outside of that you really have to do something that is an event to draw big box office.

It's $20-$25 a ticket, $10-$15 for popcorn, another $6-10 for a soda, people don't want to keep seeing the same shit over and over again.

"Superhero with superhero problems" doesn't cut it anymore as a draw. People have seen Guardians of the Galaxy, just having that vibe/hook isn't wowwing anyone any more. It's not 2017 anymore.

I think only Avengers + Spider-Man can reliably pull $1 billion in box office any more of superhero comics (Deadpool + Wolverine seemed like a one off team up). Everything else is going to be adjusted down the line. The regular/normal audience just doesn't view superheroes as must see viewing anymore. Days of "general superhero origin story" automatically making big dollars is over.

I think this was totally expected. Regardless of all the dumb internet conversations around Milly Alcock there was just no interest in this movie at all.

Maybe to some extent. Avengers: Doomsday will be the ultimate test. If it underperforms (even if it still clearly breaks even which is all but guaranteed). Marvel and DC in particular as the superhero giants will have to change plans a lot and possibly scale back the budget or number of films made.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is all but guaranteed to be a success and again at least break even by some extent even if it struggles.

I don't see Incredibles 3 getting cancelled, maybe retooled and delayed to 2029 or 2030.

I still am going to see Supergirl, doesn't matter to me that it's a flop with meh reception.

Superman was already incredibly meh and this seems to be even worse so no surprise.

The superhero movie boon ended with Endgame, we won't have anything like that era anymore for a looong time. Sure, Spider-Man is still bringing numbers, and Avengers will too as others have said, I can see X-Men doing good too if Marvel can land a good reboot after 20th Century Fox milked them to the last drop with progressively worse movies. On the DC side, they have... Batman. That's it, just Batman. Any other superhero movie will get a lukewarm reception at best.

They keep messing up the obvious order of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League. If they so badly wanted to imitate the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's the formula and everyone seems to recognize this except the people making decisions.
Superman (2025) has one scene of Supergirl drunkenly stumbling into the Fortress of Solitude, calling Superman a bitch and then drunkenly stumbling out. What about that is supposed to make audiences want to see more? They should build up characters like that before sending them off on their own.
