Physical games on the spinning disc systems are pointless unless you can play from the disc without install. If you have to install the game you might as we’ll get it by download (unless you live in a developing country with monthly limits to how much you can download).

Cardrige based systems that can play off the cartridge are worth to continue supporting physical games for (which basically means only Nintendo currently).

Even if you need to "install" it on your system the "data" is still on the disc, not sure what your smoking but that is absolutely NOT the same as a digital license...

Thats because pc is not a closed ecosystem, if valve/steam would do the same shit sony been doing and will do people would just massivly pirate their games...

Nah stuff like consumer rights doesnt matter. Thats just a teeny tiny part of gamers who like that shit. Steam would be fine just like the PS6 will be...

Consumers rights is just one of the things.

Much higher game prices.

Lame ass deals " yaay 40% of a 90euro  game on psn i get for 20 physical"

Ads in games( mark my words it will happen)

Ever getting higher subscribtion cost + another "ad free" one.

And ofc delistings that will happen a lot more.

Ps5/6servers will get shut down one day.

Steam has those same issues? Noo it has not.

Ps6 will be a bigger dissaster then the ps3 was.

Unlike the downloaded data on your harddrive? (Yeah yeah I know we are currently in the memorypocalyps with soaring prices on SSDs, but the long term trend has been that storage gets cheaper an cheaper)

Physical discs bring with them ownership, resell value and market competition, it's vastly different to digital downloads, even if you have to install them.

I am time and time again astonished that even on a nerd site like VGChartz this is not absolute common knowledge. It is o.k. if one personally does not value these advantages of physical media over digital's convenience, but at least decide that on an enlightened basis. But so many people do not even seem to understand.

Being able to resell is something that is a point to physical games (even on disc).

Market competition I would say isn’t really a thing unless other entities are allowed to make their own copies and sell. Otherwise it will just be vendors selling at a loss and that isn’t a sustainable model.

Ownership is an illusion for digital media. At best you can see physical games as a transferable license, otherwise software piracy wouldn’t be illegal (if you truly own it you should be allowed to create copies to your hearts content).

So in the end convenience wins and downloads are ”better” if you have to install it anyway. This with the exception for cartridges that can play the game as easily as just popping it into your console and playing directly off it. And in the end cartridges will be gone soon also.

Square Enix report 90% of their game sales are digital.
• Download unit sales - 6.65M (90.1%)
• Packaged unit sales - 730k (9.9%)
Sales from April 1 - June 30, 2026

Also no physical software is not that bad, the thing is what troublesome is what next ...Thanks to high prices for hardware related products the step to 'only cloud streaming' is going to be the norm fast or they will push for it hard.
