Physical discs bring with them ownership, resell value and market competition, it's vastly different to digital downloads, even if you have to install them.

Being able to resell is something that is a point to physical games (even on disc).

Market competition I would say isn’t really a thing unless other entities are allowed to make their own copies and sell. Otherwise it will just be vendors selling at a loss and that isn’t a sustainable model.

Ownership is an illusion for digital media. At best you can see physical games as a transferable license, otherwise software piracy wouldn’t be illegal (if you truly own it you should be allowed to create copies to your hearts content).

So in the end convenience wins and downloads are ”better” if you have to install it anyway. This with the exception for cartridges that can play the game as easily as just popping it into your console and playing directly off it. And in the end cartridges will be gone soon also.

Noo.
