Forums - Gaming - Steam Machine starts at $1049

Terrible price. I guess entry level is not an option in the current situation, so they're embracing milking whoever is willing to get milked. If I remember correctly, Steam Deck sold out soon after its price increase, so maybe they're expecting this to do well too.

The only good thing about this is that since it's PC, at least you have options. The bad part is that the options are bad too, but I guess they're not as bad.

If the market's already shying away from a $650 PS5, a $1050 Gabecube doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell.

I have no idea why Gabe wants to lose money. Cancelling the whole project was the smarter choice and simply wait for a better time in the future. There is a reason I no longer watch DF, Rich is so desperate, jeez.

I didn't even think of that you know, they really should've just cancelled it cause what is this?

I never had high hopes for this as I felt it had the same core issues the OG steam machines did but wow this is horrendous value.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

What's also wild here is that if your care about specs and not flexibility/having your Steam library, PS5 Pro is cheaper.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)

PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

"Let go your earthly tether, enter the void, empty and become wind." - Guru Laghima

$1609 for the cheapest model without a controller here in Australia; $2228 for the 2TB model with a controller.

So for even the entry level cost, I could buy say a Switch 2 and a Series S, and still have like $300 spare.

For the 2TB model, I could buy a used car.

The Steambox fans were right, Nintendo is doomed.

Same way the Steam Deck’s install base of 5 million was going to crush the Switch and Switch 2.

The steam deck is at what? 5-6m by now?

This will do far worse, one because of the price and two because it's far less useful to current PC gamers. A handheld pc makes more sense as a companion to your desktop than this.

I think Steam Deck is around 6M maybe?

I expect around half the performance here, even with the insane price, it'll have a niche.

3M is the most I can see it doing by 2030.

I honestly don't expect it to sell more than say ~1m units lifetime or so.

The PS5 Pro is many times more powerful machine too.
SteamMachine is weaker than the Base PS5 (by like ~15%).

Ironically, the Steam Machine is spiking up PS5 and PS5Pro sales.

Physical Games for this one?

I’ve suggested that game companies should sell games on individual PCIe sticks that plug into an external slot. Bring cartridges back.

That wasn’t going to happen even before the AI bubble sent storage prices to the moon, but still.

Yeah, this is too much. I’m out.
