Forums - Gaming - Steam Machine starts at $1049

So it won’t do any better than the last time they tried? Who is even the market for something like this?

I understand the concept of a device that bridges the gap between home console and PC with their OS but this won’t satisfy either of those demographics. It’s priced way too high for console gamers and it’s not powerful enough to compete with high end PCs.

It’s a device that’s trying to be the best of both worlds that ends up being the worst of both.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

The pricing is insane. Even if Valve is selling it a loss, while the big 3 tend to sell their consoles at a loss or breakeven with that money being made up with subscriptions and game purchases.

I do wonder if Sony or Microsoft is seeing the versions without a controller and are thinking if they could sell a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for $50 less without a controller. I know the Xbox One controller works fine on the Xbox Series X|S. Not sure if a PS4 controller works on a PS5.

How does it compare specs wise to a PS5 pro? Especially the GPU?

Starts at 1128, need to include at least one controller.

And people think Rockstar charging $80 for GTA VI would push people back, lol.

GPU Performance is slightly worse than a base PS5, much worse than a Pro.

"Tests at matched settings between Steam Machine and PS5 show that the Valve hardware can fall a little short"

In pc terms: "performance at a midway point between the RX 6600 and the RX 7600."

CPU in the steam machine is better so in CPU bound titles it can outperform the ps5 but in the majority of titles it's going to do about the same or worse.

There we have it. The first £1k system, you can now basically guarantee the next PS5/XS price rise will follow suit. Hardware industry is basically dead.

Nah, Valve doesn't make mass appeal hardware, it's not a good comparison to PS6, PS sells north on 100M units, this will sell less than 20x that.

Sony has a much, much bigger interest on selling their PS than Valve does selling a PC in a box.

512gb? For 1100 bucks and NOO controller.
Even my ps3 had 512gb..
This is just to funny

This *feels* like it is too much, right?

On the other hand.... I built a pc myself that cost more.
(which granted has more cpu,gpu power, and more ssd/hdd space ect)

Ouch. I guessed the entry level one at around 800$ sometime late last year, this is a lot more than I would have ever imagined. It's a tough sell on most days.
