Movies I am fine with sometimes buying physical or digital copies separately over time. Games, I don't really ever do it. I've mulled over getting a physical copy of New Horizons because it's a very important game to me and I'd love to have a tangible copy, but I haven't been able to justify the expense yet.
If I do ever get it physically, it will probably be the Switch 2 Edition unless I can get the Switch version really cheap for around $20 or under.
Lifetime Sales Predictions
Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)
PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)
Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)
Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)
PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)
3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

This is a very good strategy. Sometimes I like to buy a game on every platform and storefront so I don't have to remember where I own it.
Totally understand the OP.
It's not for everyone and all depends on people's finance. Some of us has the means, or want, while others don't, or simply choose not to. To each their own as long as they're happy with their own choice.
The way I've been doing it is, firstly buy the physical game, if it's multiplatform then I'd buy it on my preferred console (Playstation). And then will buy it again on same or even multiple consoles/PC when its dirty cheap. Sometimes, when I finally get the chance to play my backlog, rather than opening it I'll just buy it digitally for really low price.
...except for Nintendo 1st party games. They remain full price across multiple generations and Nintendo does a decent job keeping physical on shelves (hopefully stays this way) so not really missing out if I kept delaying buying Nintendo 1st party games. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake can wait and I'll pick that up for the Switch 3 lol
Pretty good strategy, but I think it could be improved.
First, you should buy an additional copy to be stored in an underground bunker whose location will only be known by you. That way you have an extra backup.
Next, you should buy an extra Switch, set up another account, and get a digital copy for that account. That way if there is an an issue that applies to only one account or console, you're covered.
Next, you should buy another two physical copies of each game and set up two additional underground bunkers in case you forget the location of the first one.
Lastly, buy another two digital copies of each game, just to maintain an even balance.
With this I think you should be pretty covered.
After years of swearing to buy physical, I've lately decided to change my tune on digital. A lot of it comes from the fact that I know I will never sell my games in my lifetime. But the other is the reality that some games are absolutely worthless to have in physical form.
A game like Splatoon 2, where most of its value requires online play, is pointless to have anything but a digital version. You will never recoup the cost of such a heavy online game, and you can never 'own' it because most of its value is in something you cannot own. (You cannot own people and force them to play Splatoon.)
Other games have crazy amounts of DLC you need to download. No point in owning a game where half of its content needs to be bought. Like say...Street Fighter 6, which I bought digitally. Until Capcom releases a Complete Physical version, just buy digital.
So, from my point of view, I will buy physical games whose value lies largely offline and in the cartridge. RPGs and most 1st party Nintendo games are practically mandatory in physical form for me.
As for buying both physical and digital versions solution...well not everyone can afford it

Some people take the world way too seriously.

Just buy the publishers themselves and the manufacturing plants. Then they can keep making any version you want!
